When that win is extra satisfying...

You know the occasional match where the win sticks with you into the next day? I shut out an opponent last night and damn it still feels good.

The guy was just a seething douche. He started talking smack right away and I just kept it to myself, was nice to the guy despite the bad taste he left.

Kept playing my game and shut him down. As the match went on he started talking even more shit, little jabs, nothing outright. I was on the way to a nice run out, and he says oh we have have a shoota! Then a little later, oh I guess we are speeding up the match. I just smile and keep shooting.

I win game three and he starts saying you know I was league MVP last season. Me, oh cool, that's awesome. Smile, keep shooting. Who says shit like this? I guess the guy really wanted me to know I was beating the crap out of somebody special. I get on the hill and he says, you know that's the first point I have given up in over 10 matches. Me, oh I'm flattered, I guess every dog has their day. I win every single game and the guy shakes my hand but promptly leaves. Oh also, I think he had a lady friend there too. Man it felt sweet.

I recently took over as captain for this particular team, and this was last season's 1st place team. We whomped them overall too, we won every match except for one due to a bad roll and an early 8. Still felt nice as my first game as captain, and to beat the smack talking douche with nothing but a smile and some good pool.

Let's here some your win stories where it was extra satisfying...

Only 1 sticks out that can be confirmed, beat Ronnie Alcano in the 2002 US Open hill-hill being down 1-7 or 1-9. This was the first year he splashed onto the East Coast scene and had won the Joss Tour that year plus he was billed as the "Next Efren" by those whispering in the stands.

So of course I'm playing very timidly and dogging more balls than usual which digs the nice 1-7 or 1-9 hole in our match. Not sure if I took a break or just talked myself into removing my head from my ass but either way I started focusing on every step of the pre-shot routine and trying for pinpoint position play. Somehow the score get's knotted at 10-10 and I can still recall the last shot, I got goofy (of course) on the 3-ball and could have cut it in the side, shot it in the corner or done something with the 9-ball which was sitting right next to it.

Of course I closed my eyes and took the flyer and played position on the 4-ball because the 3-ball was almost certainly going in the side caroming off the 9. Somehow they both fell and I almost fainted from the realization that the match was over and in my favor. He was really cool during the whole match and I learned about how his brother gave him the Viking cue he was playing with before his sudden passing. He wished me luck after the match during the handshake and you could have blown me over with a whisper I was so shaky at that point.

The entire trip was a wonderful experience as I finished 13th in my first Open, later on during a loser's side match Nick Schulman and I played another hill-hill match where he displayed an AMAZING display of sportsmanship in the largest tournament in the US at the tender age of 16. Phil Capelle actually interviewed me after this trip and had it on his website for a bit but I just searched and it's no longer there, it covered the trip and especially specifics on the Schulman match. I was so happy to see Nick become a successful poker player and human being as he did an amazing act of self-refereeing and ended up losing the match most likely from that act.

Neil

TL : DR- I beat a Filipino at the US Open, Nick Schulman is a wonderful person.

Edit: Mr. Capelle was kind enough to send the article which I attached for your viewing torture...I mean pleasure ha ha.
