I was just wondering if top players like Ralph Souquet, Neils Feijen, Thorston Hohmann, Thomas Engert, Reyes, Bustamante, just to name a few cuz they would have to carry them home or ship them home. do you think that they would go thru the expense of shipping them home? or do you think that they would take them on a plane with them, either as carry on or as checked baggage?? or do you think that they get rid of them right away?/ ie: discard in the trash or dumpster or give them to other people...
Can you imagine how many Reyes or Bustamante have already. Plus even Earl Strickland. how many he must have. think he keeps them all to put on display??????.................... was just curious of what your opinion would be. myself. i keep any trophies i have ever won in pool....mike

I know that when I saw that Waterford Crystal trophy at Vally Forge.
I had to have it at all cost.

That is quite a beauty, Shawn. What a wonderful keepsake for your great win in a very tough field at Valley Forge. :)

The trophy that Niels Feijan won at the Super Billiards Championship is another crystal work of art. I think I remember overhearing that it cost well over $3,000.

Picture of Niel's trophy from the Skins Billiards Championship.

Trophies are for Bowling....

Do not want to Hi Jack this thread, but I think most of us would like to go home with MONEY, after paying a STIFF Entry Fee to play in a Tournament.

I have a Buddy who is very involved in Senior Olympics, and last year when they Hosted the (Old FARTS POOL) where I live I was surprised that the turn out of Player was Pee Poor.

Think one of the reason is the Entry Fee of $15.00, and if you place in the Top Three you get a CRAPPY Medal.

Personally I think most of the Better Players in the many Jurassic Parks here in AZ old enought to play in AZ Senior Olympicswould rather put their $15.00 into a Tournament with a Money Pot, as the CRAPPY Medal is not an inducement to play.

Also as we speak of Tournaments, and Senior Olympics/Games. Think if the event was Big maybe some Door Prices where you got one chance to win the Door Prize with your Entry would also bring out additional players. Because of the Door Prizes. IMO.

I only have 2 trophies from pool. One I won at a large B&C player 9 ball tourney and the other a player gave me after winning The Shamrock Shoot Out at the old Starchers in Akron. I don't know what I did with the prize money from the tournament I won but at least I still have the trophy. Most of the time I'd be happy with the return of my entry fee minus greens fees and a trophy. A true ameutre I guess. :p

whatever it takes

I remember winning a womens tournament in pennsylvania, and getting third in the doubles. The trophies were huge! I had to unscrew it in like five different places to ship them back home. They took up the whole back seat! I never got rid of any trophy, they each mean something different to me.

In leagues, I think trophies (or wall plaques which are smaller and easier to display) are great....for the winners. Second place plaques are a waste of money, imho, unless you or your team has never had a trophy at all. So I prefer the option of a second place trophy.

People love to brag. And bragging is more effective and fun when you have something to show to back up the bragging. So, to help the turnout in league play, trophies are essential. So are those little pins that tell about getting the most runnouts, the most wins, highest average, most 8-ball breaks, etc. Anything that helps promote the excitement of playing well is VERY important to the sport.

Another example is photos. Getting a photo taken with a pro, for example, has the same effect on the sport. It is something to show and talk about...this is important to the basic motivation of getting new players into the game, both as players AND spectators.

Sometimes a piece of "junk" is more important than a hunk of cash. The cash gets spent and forgotten; the trophy stands the test of time. Then when you need some confidence building, the trophy is always there to help you.

I have 2 trophy's, 1 from pool, and the other from bowling. The rest that I have won throughout the years were given away to nephews or made their way to the trash cans. The one that I got playing pool was from a league in Las Vegas when I played for the Cue Club. It stands about 4 feet, kinda cool, and somehow it's made it through the last 14 or 15 years. The one I got in bowling is from probably 1982, maybe 83, when I won a club tournament at Pioneer Bowl which is no longer in business, and it too has made it through the years. It stands about 3 feet tall. Trophy's are nice to look at, bring back some memories, but for the most part, they just get in the way. Now, if I had tournament wins like Niels and Shawn and received a Crystal Bowl like that, yeah, I'd make sure to put that on display in my house. So, in my opinion, it depends on the trophy, I'd say. I'd sure like to have a trophy for the win in San Antonio when I beat Buddy in the finals. That one would have been worth keeping. But, I have the memories and those can never be thrown away. Peace, John.

As an amateur, I still enjoy getting trophies today (in addition to cash :) ). And really, if we didn't get trophies, but instead we would get the cash equivalent of a trophy (for amateur players), what would we be getting? $5 -$15 extra? The memory is worth 100 times that. My kids getting all giddy when I bring home a trophy is 1,000,000 time worth more than the extra cash.

The trophy reminds me that for one magic moment, even if it doesn't repeat itself, I was on top. And nobody can take that moment away, not when you have a trophy to look at.

That's exactly right.............

Well

As I live in a Small Condo with only 1 BR, Dog, and Wifife I do not have room for Trophies, or much of anything that requires display area.

But alway have Room in my wallet for MONEY.:p

chrome

I have collected a fair amount of chrome over the years in various activities. Trouble was that the powers that be wouldn't even take a trophy in place of my next entry fee. I didn't get where I had to be to win trophies by giving out trophies and I was never keen on getting trophies for my efforts.

I kept trophies for a little while if they helped promote my business otherwise I gave them away on the spot or gave/threw them away later. Of course I have never earned a trophy with a serious cash value or practical use. I think I would try the three thousand dollar crystal on e-bay! :D

After you win one , then tell me if you would still feel the same way.?

could be you are right

Could be you are right, that is quite a trophy you won. My trophies have always been in the "dust collector" category and I only used them for promotion or to rag a friend for a little while before getting rid of them. :D

My father-in-law has a ring from the ABC for the one 300 game he threw. In football they have Super Bowl rings. I think it would be cool if they had a measure of a perfect game or match in pool like the 300 in bowling. Maybe the BCA could give a 1000 ring to any pro that shoots an Accustats 1000. My father-in-law is not even the best bowler in his family, his brother has bowled 3 perfect games. I think, excellence should be acknowledged in such a way.

They are okay ...

until you get so many of them that they become a problem,
and you have to dust them all the time.

I have 3 big moving boxes of them in my storage shed...

They are nice for saying, "I did it", but then life goes on ...

A friend of mine had a similar problem and his wife took the front plaques off of the trophies that meant the most to him (where it says 'champion' etc.) and had them all mounted on a single wooden plaque that they hung in their living room. I thought it was a good idea because you keep the memories but save the space. I've thought of doing that myself since I also have more than I know what to do with.

Well, what do ya know. Looks like I'm not in the minority after all. I said that I would rather get a little less $ and get a trophy some time ago in a thread and nobody said anything.

Maybe it was the thread topic. I think the thread was something about gambling. I got involved in the thread saying that I don't play for much money at all. Normally, maybe a little 2 dollar 9 ball or 3 dollar 8 ball. Sometimes a race for $20 if the race is at least to 6. So maybe the title of the thread attracted the people that think the money is the most important thing.

Most of the trophies I have now are for Ballroom Dancing. Can I now be on my feet teaching 8 to 10 hours and then spend another 2 hours practicing for the next competition? No, I have trouble walking more than two blocks now. So now that I'm not dancing any more those trophies mean a lot to me. Imagine your 85 years old and you can't hold the stick steady any more. Do you think you might enjoy looking up at the mantle and seeing a couple trophies up there? Do you think you might have them rather prominent in the living room when your great grandchildren come to visit? If your answer is 'no' then I think your to young to imagine being 85 years old.

Yes, the money you win in a tournament is fine. I guess especially if that is one of the major ways you make money. For me when I win it is the feeling of accomplishment. The trophy reminds me of that. LOL In Ballroom Dancing you don't really have a choice. You have to like the trophy cause the money isn't there. You pro pool players think you don't get much? This year the 2005 U.S. Ballroom Dance Champions will win $5000.00. Since ballroom dancing is a two person thing, that has to be split two ways.
