There's probably a dozen. In Asia, they actually treat it like a sport with funding and everything and not a bar box in sight. Imagine?

What is a barbox... here it's 9footers, the odd 10footer and Chinese-8 tables only. There's some funding, but I'd say the privileged are still the ones with backing (whether being born with some $$$ or having the right connection)

Chang Jung Lin is a Goat. Love watching him do anything with a cue in his hand. Chang Yu Long was a great character to watch around the table.

A few things to bear in mind gambling needing a spot.

The great road player UJ Puckett, "I gave them what they asked for, I didn't give them what they needed."

There was a good guy on here that played for sport and honestly tried to match up so that the play was a toss-up. He also kept excellent records. He was surprised and embarrassed to find that he won 75% of the time when giving a spot.

The truth is when someone is on a different level than you so that a small spot can't get you a win sometimes, there is no spot that will get you there.

I suspect you know but whoever is taking the balls off the table is the one getting the spot, regardless of whose balls are coming off the table.

Jay has been around gambling since he was in three cornered pants. I would listen to anything he has to say about gambling. Try to gamble, if you want to, with people who aren't vastly far above you. You still learn. A lot of what you will see playing the best won't do much good until your play is highly advanced also.

Having said all this, if you have advanced players that will play cheap, playing them occasionally can be fun. If you want to run with the big dogs you have to get out from under the porch. You just want to be sure you have lost your milk teeth before you try to run with the lead dogs.

Most basic rule of gambling, nobody is giving you a spot they think you will win at. Despite the claims on AZB, nobody outruns the nuts all the time.

Have fun gambling but that doesn't mean you have to be mad at your money.

Back in the day. I would average about 250 a week in the small money games and tournaments. So week end trip to the 211 in Seattle with 50 budget for a lesson. Even got some for free playing Portland Slim.
One lesson that I got tired of was one pocket for 10 playing Double Kiss Doolie with a spot. Not even close to enough. Hard to learn the right way to play when he doesn't need to play right to snatch my play money. So after declining his offers to play on consecutive visits, his sales pitch for a $10 game became insistant and an irritation. So I came back with a counter offer. "Let's just go outside and fight for it." A contest I would have needed a huge spot in as well. His response of, "Greg that wouldn't be fun." Was a relief and provided me the reply of, ""Well playing you pool is no longer fun for me. I will Let You Know if I want to play." Got him off my back and move on to 8 ball last pocket lessons with Portland Slim.

I think I wasn't clever about how I negotiated the spot, I asked for too much wanting the pocket named for the black ball. I could have said pick a side of the table, I still could have manufactured something or worked with that. If I wanted to guarantee him giving me the spot I needed, I'd have to hustle harder. I shouldn't have cleaned or showed potential in cleaning.
I think in such situations I need to be smarter about what I am asking for. But at the end of the day, like I said, It was a lesson for me. I enjoyed it. Hurts to lose money, but the experience has value (that nearly makes it worth the little hole in the wallet.

No one was being a pest here. Don't think anyone needed to be. We played some knock around stuff for fun after... naturally I felt like I was playing better then for some reason... wonder why

The bar box in the Seattle Tacoma area was usually an 8' coin op. Always for money. When the new game negotiation got to "how much?" My answer was always, "whatever is comfortable." Let them name the stakes. Once upon a time, I approached Shawn for a $5 off handed 9 ball game. Shawn had an edge on me playing right and offered the 8. I wanted the 7. We had done it off handed the night previous at 5 and Shawn won 35. I knew I liked the game, so when Shawn scoffed and replied, "if we are going to play off handed we have to play for 10." My reply came instantly. "If we have to play for 10 we have to play for 20. Shawn had scored 240 at the track earlier that day. I got it all. Shrug

Taiwanese are welcome to travel 'home' to China at anytime. It is a bit more complicated for people to travel from mainland to Taiwan. It's a complicated relationship, with lots of political fun and games involved. Not something I'm particularly qualified to discuss, I could only give opinion... Tend to take the "not my monkey, not my circus" approach...

No, it's a me saying for when people discuss things with which they can only ever approach with a limited understanding, that has the potential to cause upset or problems I stole it from an American friend who uses it often.
It was won by a local player, not sure whom.
It happens bi-monthly at this particular venue. This was an end of year 'big'un'
I wouldn't say I swam anywhere... but it was good fun flopping around in the shallow end of the adult pool
