Lenny, but most likely, they will raise you where you can not win it, that's usually how it goes.

I have heard the Arizona rating system sucks, per a friend of mine, Donnie Brown, who moved back to OKC because of it.

It is one thing to handicap to get participation, but the rating system should not keep raising someone higher and higher till they do not have a chance to win anymore, which many do nowdays. When a handicap system raises someone ABOVE their skill level, the system is flawed.

BTW, who all is playing in a tournament this Super Bowl Weekend. I am playing is a monthly tournament (first Saturday of the month) at Southrock Billiards. 9 ball, 32 players, race to 6, $25 entry fee. $500 added for 32 players, $300 added for 16 players. Calcutta, and 1 day tournament

And I am going to buy some raffle tickets for the $1,000 Shurtz cue they are giving away on Sunday at the Superbowl party. $10 for 4 tickets.
Southrock frequently raffles off Shurtz cues at quite a few of their tournaments during the year, the big ones anyway. Bob Owen get credit too for contributing the cues for this.

No pool tournaments for me this Superbowl weekend but I did look at the Shurtz cues at the Derby City Classic. I like his work and his prices are very good. I didn't get a chance to hit any balls with his cues but they looked very good.

I agree it seems to be,the tourney i would play back home in NY was races to 6 single elimination,it was a 10 week thing,if you didnt cash every 3 weeks you went down a ball,a 1st place would put you up a ball or 2 2nd places also would put you up a ball. The ratings of the players were really on making for it to be competitive and anyone to win.It seems like this way your rating follows you everywhere in the state i assume or is it just for that room?

But you usually only get raised because you've won it... i.e. allegedly like the guy mentioned in this thread who won it 4 times in a row..

Moved to OKC, just because of the Arizona rating system??? Sounds a bit extreme.
If he plays lower than a 10, then he aint good enough to live off of just pool anyway. If he plays 10 or above, then there are a number of big events to play in with some pretty good money.

Either way, would be surprised if he moved just cuz of the rating system. For example, if he moved solely because of the pool action... then what were his 2nd and 3rd option cities that he considered moving to?

As already stated, you generally get raised because you're winning tournaments (in excess). So, would find it difficult to believe that 1 skill level raise, requiring a spot of 1 additional game, would make it impossible to play and win any future tournaments. Unless of course, you're referring to sandbaggers who always want to be UNDER RATED, so the rating is never right in their mind unless they win almost every tournament they enter.

How would you make the Arizona rating system better? Tossing it out completely is not a viable option, so if that's your suggestion you should look deeper.
