Wood Allergies

I was cruising the web researching dust collection and wood allergies when I found a page that said overexposure to the oil in teak wood can cause your testicles to swell...

I was wondering if anyone here has ever had any severe type reactions to any woods or chemicals you use. I've had some minor irritations on the skin and with my sinuses, but I've learned to wear my mask and gloves to minimize these irritations. I get the big head on occasion, but I've been lucky enough to dodge the swollen testicles.

No swollen testicles but Zebrawood and Leopardwood have caused skin irritations on me. Cocobolo is also known to cause many people skin irritations.

Ouch:eek: I managed to avoid that luckily, think I'll stay away from the teak oils if it does that to you. ;)

Mostly sinus and chest is what I've experienced, and every once and a while the tops of My hands get ichy & slightly red, but don't know if that's the cause of It or not, and that part does'nt last long. The sinus, head and chest thing can get bad though, and sure that It's directly related.

I understand that the people who are effected by Poison Ivy & plants like that, also have a problem with the oils from the exotic woods. I can lay down in it & I'm not effected at all. On the other hand I have a brother who only has to be near Poison Ivy & he gets a bad reaction. The dust from exotics don't bother me, but he can't be in the room without swelling up...JER

Good Point, I guess I should have mentioned that I'm not allergic to posion ivy, Oak or those kind of things either, so just because something does'nt break Me out does'nt mean It won't someone else. My Father and brother were the same way, and that stuff does'nt effect them either, so must be in the genes or something. I had a friend break out from head to toe one time with huge blisters that spread over just about his entire body when we got into some poison sumac, and I really felt sorry for him, because he was fairly bad off from the effects. I've yet to experience anything like that with woods. just the sinus, and that's My own fault from not wearing the mask as much as I should.

Cocobolo and rosewoods burn my sons hands when he touches them. I had a customer that went to hospital over his reaction to cocobolo. Cocobolo dust really iritates my nose and lungs. Red heart is also pretty bad. All wood dust is bad to breath, but exotic dust is worse.

Cocobolo & that whole family of woods smells like pipe tobacco to me, but I wear a good mask when sanding...JER

I have read that coco dust has been used to stun fish by some tribesmen while fishing. Don't know if it is true.
