Can someone please tell me what this wood is? It's pretty light weight @ about 42lbs per Sq ft and quite dry.

The top pc appears to be Big Leaf Maple showing 'quilt'.
The 2nd pc is likely the same species but shown at a different angle/side.

Wood isn't weighed by the sq.ft., it's weighed by the cubic ft.
You may want to correct your data. BL Maple is super light.

At first glance I thought redwood, but KJ might be correct about it being BL maple. Hard to say without seeing it in person.

Thank you for the info. The sq ft was a typo I know it's cubic I posted that moments before going to bed last night. 42 feet per cubic foot is what it weighs.

One would expect someone to be fully conscious at 10:12 AM right ?

http://www.wood-database.com/bigleaf-maple/

Average Dried Weight: 34 lbs/ft3

That's some heavy Big Leaf you've got there.
Maybe time to check the batteries in the scale and calculator.

Just for jeeps I did a search of Redwood, Sequoia, Coast Redwood, California Redwood.

Average Dried Weight: 26 lbs/ft3.

You're up on coring, right ?

Double checked the weight and dimensions on another piece of it and it came in at 43 lbs/ft3. It's 19.3 oz, 19.87" long and 1.55" square. I wrote a simple excel spread sheet to calculate wood density in squares, rounds and truncated cones. It's pretty much right on the money.

I agree it's heavy for our western maple and dark too. That's partly why I wasn't sure what it was. Someone gave it to me and it had been sitting around for at least 10 years. I figured it probably came from around here somewhere.
