Wood identification

Well as long as people are helping me with this wood ID let me ask another. I asked in a different thread and never got any response.
It is a Heubler SP I repaired. Here are pictures of unfinished, original finish and new finish. I was thinking walnut, but not sure.

Looks like english walnut, could be black walnut with sapwood, you'd know from the unmistakable smell when sanding.

End grain would show better, Red Palm possibly.
I really think this wood is gonna be more red than

black palm under finish, several of my Titlist have virtually identical grain
Here it is with a little finish, the end grain and next to the piece of red palm I have.

Thanks for the input so far.
I did some searching on the web and I see the difference between the red and black better now.
Both types can have a few of variations to the grain pattern.

The piece of red palm I have is lighter which threw me off and it is spalted some so that didn't help either.

I guess I agree with the cue being Red Palm.

Tree species are classified based on leaves, not the wood. This makes wood identification a guessing game at best. Good luck!

Red Palm is sometimes called Coconut Palm and it can be a bit softer than Black Palm.
Color and grain certainly will change a bit even on the same tree.
Brownheart is a wood with similar characteristics, It was used for decades back in the day. I have more Brownheart vintage Brunswick cues than any other species of wood.

At first I was not crazy about the Brownheart, due to lack of character but I have grown to love the way it looks. It can be fabulous when finished correctly.

Wow once I'm convinced it is one type of wood, I get new info that seems better.

After comparing end grain and appearance to the images in the wood database, Brownheart does seem like the better match.

I think it is one of those two, Brownheart, or Red Palm.

I find all those exotic woods in those antique cues interesting. I don’t think Brunswick knew what types of woods they were buying off the ships that came to ports. The just referred to them as “Fancy Woods”. Many of which are no longer available, or endanger of becoming extinct.

I have another antique cue that I’ve posted pics of on the forum, but no luck coming up with a name. Probably extinct years ago, that cue is probably 100 years old.
