So you spin sand shafts only?
You don't sand them lengthwise at all ?

I spin sand all my shafts. Hardly ever sand with the grain and so far it works for me.

While the shaft is spinning I use with the grain motions. But because the shaft is spinning that sanding motion is more across the grain than with. I would never take the time to hand sand a shaft. It needs to be spinning to keep its round otherwise you'll create a flat spot anyways.
