Funny you should mention the dremel. I was going through all the pictures on my computer and found this one. My very first tapering setup circa 1998. Yes that is a dremel with a flex shaft. Worked less than spectacular but it got the job done until I tried cutting a metal ring :rolleyes:

That led to the Foredom tool. It was laying around and did not cost me anything so I gave it a try. Still not great. After a few weeks I bought the porter cable router and never looked back.

The B&D is a great buy and more heavily built than the multipro. For 50 bucks it well worth it. Got 6 speeds in it and you could use all the dremel bits available (B&D doesn't have as extensive a line as dremel) and the flex shaft works better than that of the multi pro. Amazingly their flex shafts are interchangeable. Tried using both and the B&D works fine for me. Used it to carve out the ivory inlay in one of the pics I posted here.

Plan to get another one for a pantomill set up. Anyone got a pantomill pic or design idea?

wood combo

I've been toying around with this idea for sometime but still havent made up my mind... any suggestions on these wood combos? Interchangeable perhaps

cocobolo/amboyna/cocobolo
cocobolo/curly maple/cocobolo
pink ivory/madagascar bois de rose/pink ivory (this I feel is begging for inlays and would be good for the ladies to shoot with. I wouldn't be caught dead shooting with a pink cue :D)

Don't buy Black and Decker.
They are crap now.
My dad had an OLD B&D power drill, it ran for years. It finally gave out. He went and got a new one (basically just like the old one) and it burned out in two weeks...
They started selling them in Wal-Mart, and they kept having to cut pricing, the rest you can figure out.
The company didn't sell Dewalt in Wal-Mart and they are still supposed to be pretty good quality.

Okay now, about brass rings, has anyone tried using brass shims as ring decos? It could be worked out as venneers too. I'm experimenting on one right now and will post pics when it's done.

Man I got in touch with express cutting tools and they gave me a quote for a boring bar min. hole diameter 0.250 depth 2.0" for $23.00. What dya think?

Are you talking about (imagination time) say, taking the rings i posted and instead of just inlaying the bocote in there, using a slimmer piece of bocote with a brass shim on each side? Then maybe a brass ring on each side when it's glued up in the cue?

That quote for the boring bar sounds good to me. Go for it. I think i found one here, if it's not as good as it should be, i'll be in contact with those guys.

Brass shims... exactly. Like those type they sell in auto-hardwares. Maybe thicker than a standard shim would be great and it cuts easily. Call it brass veneer if you may. Could prolly be done in points too between veneers. But back to the ringwork, that would really look classy with brass rings on eash side.

Huh, I used to think the same way years and years ago, but I picked up one of those firestorm cordless drills a few years back when they first came out, and that thing is as tuff as the good ones we have it seems. Stills works good too even after all that time. A guy told me they were good and built by dewalt, that's why I picked one up. Anyone know if there was any truth to that or just a rumor?

Yeah they cost out the butt to ship though, but sure they will be worth it. hard to find that stuff here.

There is just something about black phenolic/bocote/brass that just looks so damn good :D .
Great... i've already changed the ring design around half a dozen times on my personal cue... i might change it again :rolleyes: .

I still might go with the phenolic/bocote chain ring with a thin phenolic trim on each side with a thin brass after those.
I'll try to glue up a test piece and see what it looks like... i'll have to order some thin brass rings, i think all i have are the .030" and not too many of those left.

Looks like You were gettin some work out of that bad boy there Murray. It was working it's way through that taper though huh. That is suprising. Your on the money with the porter, i got mine on fleabay used, and It cuts plenty smooth for me If setup correct, even though it had seen plenty of use before i even got it.
You always give it to me straight, so tell me what's the big secret with the thick nickel/silver rings? seems like noone wants to touch that one. I figure even they are just flush cutting ,and don't want to say so, don't have no more a clue then I do on a easier way, or think It's some kind of big trade secret, like there are'nt plenty of ways to do it if you want to bad enough anyway. Either way makes no difference to me just looking to see what works the best for others, and if i am doing it the only way. Do you under cut them so they don't pop through the finish, or just flush cut them? If you undercut, what do you prefer using, and IYO is the foredom any good for that atleast? i can do it either way with patience, but wondering if there is an easier way to undercut them? sheldon told me he is doing them with the router, and a indexable insert like I am. It gets the job done, but not as nice as i would like. :confused: Any imput on your experience would be greatly apprietiated good buddy. I promise not to get us in trouble anymore if you'll still be my friend and help me out on this one, :D LOL. Thanks Greg

LOL, Yeah Had about 3 pounds of various flavor dust on Me yesterday. Looked like a strange brew of kool aid I was mixing. Thanks
 
Saw dust... mixed with epoxy... and sweat... getting under your fingernails... letting dry overnight :D
