Wood to collar joint

Hello,

I'm waiting at the moment for my Schmelke sneaky pete, with solid wood to wood 3/8x10 joint (without collar) and I plan to replace the stock shaft with Ob-1 or 314-2 which has phenolic collar near the joint area.

I know that it will probably look stupid ;) That's why I'm starting to be reluctant to this kind of setup :(

My question is, should I also be worried about the wood to collar joint regarding fragility, are there any disadvantages to this kind of connection in opposition to double sided phenolic ? Is the risk of splitting my cue near the joint area due to lack of collar significant ?

Will this kind of setup be ok ?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

no problem, so far

i make pool cues using a wood pin, and i have to have a collar on the shaft because of the 1/2 inch wood pin, with out the collar the shaft might split. BUT on my playing cue i have no collar on the butt, just on the shaft. i have been using it about 2 years, playing and breaking with no problems, and i think it looks o.k.

The collars at the joint are there for a good reason, but lots of folks get by without them. I wouldn't sweat it.
