Shows my ignorance... Never ran across one before.
Any benefits ascribed to them as apposed to the metal ones?
(Dying to see how they feel if he comes up with one!)

Talk to Chuck Starkey (desi2960), he uses fire hardened wood pins. From what I've heard he makes an interesting cue that plays amazing. He also likes using ferrule less shafts.

Production companies mostly use stainless steel joint pins, but there are a few that make cues with wood pins. It's not as common, but it's not out of the ordinary. There are a few custom makers that prefer wood pins and they receive great praise. Chuck Starkey comes to mind, as mentioned in the post above.

Wood pins are still commonly used in carom cues (Kilby, Adam, Longoni, et al.). For Chuck's cues, the screw is part of the butt. For carom cues, the screw is part of the shaft.

Not uncommon at all. I used to have an Adams cue I played with in bars with a wood screw. I loved it.

I have two Chuck Starkey cues with big wooden pins. They play great, wonderful balance and feel.

95% of all Carom cues are made with wooden pin in the shaft. It's been that way for over 75 years. Some builders are, Longoni, Hanbat, Dennis Dieckman, Ron Kilby, many, many more. All of them make Pool cues also with wooden pins.

I highly recommend trying a Chuck Starkey Wood Pin Cue, as I have (3)
and they all play very well. The latest is an All Birdseye Butt 60" without
a ferrule. Even the Joint Rings are Stabilized Birdseye Maple, so I never
break with it. This Cue plays like a one-piece. You can really "feel" the CB.

Larry Vigus builds Elegant Wood Pin Cues that play amazingly, but are
hard to come by as he is not taking orders.

Just a novelty in my (admittedly) limited experience...
