Work in Progress

Ok, now everyone these days wants to be a cuemaker. So I am going to throw my hat into the ring as well. Here are three of my works in progress. The first one is Birdseye Maple, with a wrap planed of antique white. The Second is Ebony, with a wrap planed of solid black. I think I am going to call this one "The Shadow." The final cue is Purpleheart with a solid maple handle no wrap planned. Might call this one "The Purple Cow". :) The first cue I made is know as the "Ugly Cue." I made the typical newbie mistakes and made my notes to ensure I did not make the same mistakes again.

Currently, the only machine I have is Chris' mid-size lathe and his inlay machine. I am still learning the inlay machine, thus none of these cues have inlays. I figured I should learn how to build it before I inlay it.

The good news is I am already starting to get offers on the these cues from friends, which I take as a very good sign. I am hoping to keep this as a hobby and not as my job. My current job pays too well to quit right now.

I am open to any suggestions and will not take offence to any of them. Like I said I am new at this and have learned a lot just from reading what you all post in the forums. So for that I say thank you, and enjoy...

questions/comments

good looking cues! i like them all. best of success to you. what kind of joints do you use? type of ferrule?

I will be using a standard 5/16-14 joint. Unless, I am building it specificly for a customer that would like a different joint. I am using Fibre ferrules, but will offer Ivory or others upon request.

Looks good so far! What made you decide to use 5/16-14 pins and the fiber ferrules? Just curious! What are you going to do for a finish?
I too use a Mid-Size Cue Smith and have made a handfull of cues and have some in progress right now, www.zimsrack.com.

Best of luck to you!

Personal preference on the 5/16-14 joint. The finish I used on my first cue I got from Cue Components and I was not all that happy with it. So I was going to ask what others are using as a finish.

Nice work dude... for a newbie looks very clean. How long did it take you to have them at their present state? Do you start off with squares?

I like the birdseye. PM me with a price. Oh and melamine is a great material or ferrrules. BY far my favorite hitting ferrule is the LBM. Well right next to illegal micarta.:D But hit me up with the info on the birdseye.

Don't use metal rings, you're just asking for troubles.

I dunno nuthing about cue making but I agree with you ... those metal rings, they can be swelled and felt easily .. even from top cue makers.

They don't swell. Wood shrinks.
Unseasoned woods will shrink. You can't have metal rings next to wood, you have to border them with fiber or phenolic imo.
I have a Zylr that I have tortured for 3 years. The brass rings are still flat with the finish. He knows how to them right.
