I think that's amazing that someone who was playing pool before Shane Van Boening was born was able to defeat him 100-98 (showing some heart down 98-70!)

Earl Herring also went undefeated in his group 5-0. He plays on stream today 130pm against top European pro Petri Makkonen of Finland. worldstraightpool.com

Someone said Earl broke and ran 12 racks of 9ball in a row against Ray Martin back in the day. Needless to say, Ray quit. lol

Anyone else know some strong seniors out there?

Ray Martin beat defending world champion Oliver Ortmann 2 or 3 years ago and Ray doesn't compete any more. He was only there to be inducted into the hall of fame. There is a player commentary accustats video of Ortmann running a high number in a match against Earl Herring.

Yes, it seems like 2-3 years, but it was actually 7 years ago. Ray was inducted in to the 14.1 HOF in 2011. Still VERY impressive for a 75 year old beating a 44 year old soon-to-be fellow HOF (their ages on the date of their match).

Two of my favorite players and neither competes now in the United States.

As far as I can tell, Oortmann runs a billiard supply business now here in Germany. I did see a match of his against Filler recently on Youtube, but Oliver got trounced pretty badly. You could see the talent, but he was not firing on all cylinders... Whacked his cue pretty hard twice out of frustration with his own play.

Johnny Archer gambled with Francisco Bustamante years ago. Archer broke and ran the first set - not sure if it was 11 or 13 racks. Busty asked him if he wanted to double the bet right after the set. Archer declined. And Archer ended up down at the end of the set. How strong is that?

I was in Raleigh a week ago and stopped by to see Ray. It was like a flashback- Ray was giving one lesson while while he had another guy waiting on deck. I was glad he pushed his second lesson off so we could catch up.

I remember that match Shawn I was betting on it. Bustamante won the first set and broke dry to start the second set and never once returned to the table going to 11. And like u said asked Johnny to raise it, he declined and bustamante won the third set

Bustamante also was the opponent when Appleton went 200 and out on him. Lost the lag and never got out of his chair.
