USA 9 - 8 China

We are down to the last 8 teams, all great squads and the action today promises to be incredible. Our first match today is the USA vs. China. The USA...Shane Van Boening and Rodney Morris, who won this event in 2008, will be taking on the power Chinese couple of Li He We and Liu Haitao. It's a race to 9, winner breaks. Enjoy the action as we bring you rack by rack action.

2:05: If you like top quality pool action, then you've come to the best place on the Internet. That's because it's Day 5 of the 2012 Partypoker.net World Cup of Pool, the premier team event in all of pool. Nation vs. Nation, Two Man Teams in short races, single elimination for $250,000 with $60,000 going to the winner.

2:17: USA do it right in rack 1 as they win the lag and keep China in their chairs with a break and run out. 1-0 USA

2:21: Dry break for the USA but Li leaves the 3 ball dangling over the pocket and the USA run the table. Americans lead 2-0.

2:26: Illegal break for the USA. Liu leaves poor position for Li who then scratches. USA run out and have cruised to an easy 3 - 0 lead.

2:30: USA can't capitlize off another foul by the Chinese as Morris misses a makeable 5 ball. That one could've almost closed the deal on this match. Then the Chinese fail to call an extension and the 35 second shot clock runs out and they get called for a foul and give the USA a ball in hand. It's a total debacle for China as they fall behind 4-0 to the USA.

2:39: This is not the same China we've come to expect. USA up 5-0 now and China are just giving it away with fouls, bad leaves, poor shotmaking.

2:45: USA get three balls down on the break and an open table but Shane plays poor position on the 8-ball and China gets its very first rack. Just in time as this was about to turn into an embarassing rout.

2:51: The USA may want to send a thank you card to the Chinese. It started as a messy rack. Liu hit a nice jump shot but left Li slightly snookered. The resulting safety shot went astray and the USA pounced for a 6-1 lead. I have never seen China play so poorly.

2:59: A total rout going on here at the USA break and run. 7 -1.

3:01: China stops the bleeding after the USA leave the three ball in the jaws of the pocket and China clears. 7-2

3:07: Illegal break for the Chinese. USA runs out of room but Liu ends up fouling and giving ball in hand to the USA who run the table and take it to 8-2. China are simply woeful here.

3:10: China stave off the execution by claiming that rack. Still a LOOOOOOOOng way to go. 8-3.

3:15: China get another one but it's probably too little, too late. They actually played a strong rack there. 8-4

3:19: A break and run for China, but Li barely made the 8-ball. Great comeback after being down 8-2. Race to 9 so still have lots of work to do.

3:22: China has a tantalizing look at a 2-9 combo right after the break. They miss but then Morris misses a 3-ball which he surely should have made. Feeling the heat Rodney? China clears to make it 8-6. We appear to have a match.

3:30: China gets a ball on the break but pushes out. USA gives it back and Liu hits a clutch full table jump/pot and leaves position. What in the name of great comebacks is going on here? China runs out of position and we have a safety exchange and Morris fouls! USA is surely feeling tons of pressure right now. They are blowing this whole match after having an 8-2 lead. Li did this in Qatar in June in the finals of the World 9-ball. He loves playing with his back to the wall.

3:38: Two balls down on the break for China then they play safe. Several back and forths later, Li nails an impossible full table bank on the 2 ball which has the crowd roaring. China clear the table and we are going to a one rack decider. This is an incredible comeback!

3:48: USA in a shocker! China gets two balls down on the break but have to play safe. The teams go back and forth but China is playing great safes and sure enough they get Shane to foul and get ball in hand. The USA are a shell of their former selves as they watch China cruise to an improbable comeback. The Chinese have it down to the 8 ball and two easy shots to a spot in the semis. Then inexplicably, Li pockets the 8 but the cue scratches in the side pocket! WTF!!!! Ball in hand gives the USA an unlikely win. From shattered to victory in seconds. One of the best matches in the history of the WCOP. USA move into the semi-finals and will play the winner of Philippines B and Finland later tonight.

England 8 - 9 Chinese-Taipei

5:08: England tie it up at 6 but they look very tight and not at all comfortable. That's the pressure of the WCOP. That was a very difficult rack for both sides but the English prevail.

5:13: Taiwan has 2 more to go for a massive upset. Han missed a 6 ball and left a shot for Appleton but the Englishman misses badly and shows massive frustration as the Taiwanese clear. England just haven't been able to get comfortable while the lad from Taiwan don't have a care in the world.

5:19: England tie it up after winning a safety exchange. Just in time, now we are tied at 7.

5:26: After an extended toilet break the English come out with a quick break and run to move one away from a spot in the semis.

5:31: Another one rack sudden death decider as Taiwan takes advantage of an opening left by Melling and clear the balls to tie up the match. They have no fear these boys.

5:36: It's Chinese-Taipei! Two balls down on the break and a long shot on the two which Hsin nails. Boys are off to the races. They play smart and cool right down to the finish and take the match. Nobody ever heard of these guys and they have made a massively good accounting of themselves. Taiwan in the semis where they play the winner of Italy and Poland, which is coming up next.

Quotes from the USA vs. China match:

Liu Haitao: "I was so nervous at the beginning that I was not able to leave good cueball position for Li at all. I make many mistakes and was a little bit shock, but it went better for us towards the end of the match. Lucky Li was in better form otherwise the match would end up much earlier."

"It's a shame we lost. Though he made a mistake to lose the match during the final rack but I made obviously more mistakes than him though the whole match. He was perfect since the match started. We both wanted to win so had the pressure which lead to mistakes. But at the end I think I enjoyed the match as well."

Shane Van Boening: "We played solid to get to 8, but it was a race to 9.We were 90% favoured to win the match they just got the rolls all the way until the last way.Even so, I'm thinking we have to win. When Rodney missed the 3 ball when it was 8-5, we started to think we could lose."

"They figured out the break and they were breaking better. That's why I feel the pressure. I'm thinking, 'I can't believe this happening.'When I saw that cue ball floating into that side pocket I jumped out of my chair and said 'go go go!' "

"It's awesome because all we have to do is win two more matches and we win the World Cup of Pool."

"We have to work on the break. We're playing good pool. We made maybe two mistakes. But we have to figure out the break."

Rodney Morris: "We got lucky there at the end. But if you look back they got really lucky too when they were coming back. So these things even out.Everything was going for them."

"I've seen that scratch(Li's in the last rack) a million times. I didn't know what he was trying to do there.

"We played solid in the beginning. We just lost our focus at the end. We have to improve on the break"

Just an observation over the past few days while watching live on Solar Sports...The paying seats are only half full when a Pinoy isn't playing, while the free balconies have people climbing over each other to watch. Kuripot.

I thought well-heeled "Manilites" could afford this sort of the thing, especially when it's on National TV, ala Face-to Face?

They're called Manileños, and everyone has a choice of what matches they want to pay and get close to. Why don't you just say you hate the Philippines and get it done and over with? You are really trying hard to live up to your moniker pangit, inside and out...

Italy 4 - 4 Poland

Action underway Italy with Bruno Muratore & Fabio Petroni take on Poland wiht Karol Skowerski & Wojciech Szewcyk. Poland win the lag but they run out of position and have to turn over the table. Don Bruno and Capo Fabio take it home for a 1-0 lead

6:25: Poland get their chance at the table and take full advantage and run the table for the tie, 1-1.

6:30: Fabio fouls and Poland takes ball in hand and walztses to a 2-1 lead.

6:33: Poland come right back with a break and run and are looking solid, lead 3-1

6:41: Poland break dry. Don Bruno and Capo Fabs have a shot on the one ball and clear the table to make the score 3-2 in favor of Poland.

6:44: Bruno scratches on the four ball and with ball in hand, Poland clears the table all the way to the 9-ball when the youngster Szewcyk bobbles the 9 ball in the pocket. A massive blunder. That left a tough cut in the side for Bruno who misses it. Skowerski finishes the deal and Poland now lead 4-2.

6:54: Italy benefit from a nice safety that forces Poland to kick at the ball which then leaves the table open. Italy run the table making the score 4-3.

6:59: Italy come back nicely with a break and run. That's two good racks in a row for the Italians.
