It looks like professionals are not participating.

There are some professionals there, but no top professionals. Aditya Mehta I believe is still on the tour as is Pankaj Advani. Noppon Saengkham made his return to the tour this year. Liang Wenbo is the highest ranking professional in the draw at world number 35, along with his compatriot Lu Haotian who I believe is the youngest professional on tour at 15 years of age. Also of note Dechawat Poomjeang, who was a media darling of the world championships, is also there. Can't forget Nigel Bond either, former world runner up and defending champion here.

I was a little disappointing to see no Canadian participation. Floyd Zieglar just won his 3rd national title and it would have been nice to see him or Jason Williams (runner up) test themselves against these guys.

Though it is strange that there aren't any top professionals participating.

I think there are no cash prizes, although some national sports organizations may reward top finishers.

I suspect you are right about that. It would definitely explain the absence of top players, with their schedule already so hectic I don't think they want to travel somewhere without compensation.

Wenbo is in the final as I suspected and I expect him to take the gold as he is class above Mehta. I'll be rooting for Poomjeang to take the bronze. Such an entertaining character, I just finished watching his match against Maguire at this years world championship, can't help but smile watching him.

i believe your right, its nice to win a medal for your country but if it comes at a price the players think about it.
countries like china must reward their players in one way or another,by cash or teaching jobs etc.. sports and games is at the bottom of the list in priorities here in north america.
