By creating the app, Matchroom is signaling full steam ahead for the WNT. For now. The company also just signed a deal with a data firm to try to drive audience growth. The EPL uses the same firm.
So far I am pleased with the app. It can be improved, but so much better than watching on the web.
To me the most important thing WNT can do to drive audience growth is to speed up the game. Every sport has done this except soccer/football.
The obvious next step is a 30-second shot clock on all tables. I’ve got to figure AI will make this possible in a cost-effective manner in the near future.
In Phoenix, Karl Boyes floated the idea of a 25-second shot clock and no extensions. Frost seemed to agree but thought 30 seconds was best. Fans in the chat also agreed with Scott. I suspect Frazer and Matchroom are considering this approach - and should adopt it. Ultimate Pool has shown the way and it’s worth copying.
I would keep the one-minute clock after the break, though.
Pool matches should be over in 90 minutes unless it’s race to 13 or 15. With a shot clock on every table, tournaments can be shortened a day, saving money and keeping the attention of fans focused.
