Yeah, they see that beat up 'Its George' case and 80's ebony Schon cue and then, and then, I get down to shoot :)
Steve Booth and "stroke" would be an oxymoron...

And after a few games it is obvious I'm overmatched, but the guy that has his teeth in me sure isn't letting go, and in standard poolroom tradition he and the houseman won't let anyone else even near me to play, like I'm the guy's personal fish :)
(do I know this routine well -- lol?)

Now I did go to Arizona and I did want to gamble but I only played a few games of one pocket with Kolby's owner in Tempe for fun. I walked in the first day and after one rack of 9 ball a nice man came up to ask me for a game. He did not know me and we started to play $10 9 ball. I never ask for a handicap and I wont give one unless we have played and they have lost something to merit the weight. I lost $100 and still wanted to play as I was somehow having a good time playing someone I might never see again since I live on an island in Japan. I have money and I can play for the money but since I would be there for one week there was no reason to try to beat Scott Frost the first night I arrive...I couldnt beat him anyway but it was worth the money to see him play and there was 5 shots he hit that made me understand how good he can play. $20 to see each of those shots? Gladly as I own them now and my game has improved because of his ability to read the table better than me. If I had played my best game against Scott that first night and lost I would have played exactly 0 players for money the rest of the week, I know that for certain. I stayed the week and played with only 5 guys who wished to gamble. I think it is sad that more people are not willing to step into the fire with someone who walks in the room. You will pay $20 in table time 4 nights a week and never make money. Take a chance sometimes it may pay off. You might make a new friend or arch-rival. While I was there I never asked to bet over $20 and was suprised nobody asked me to up the bet. Is $20 a big bet now in America? The players at Kolby's and the staff made me feel good about Arizona and my trip was interesting. I am glad my hotel was in the same parking lot so I could go every chance I had. Now I am back on Okinawa with a small group of players that are a few thousand balls under what I need to want to play everyday. I have lived here for 15 years and the trips to Oklahoma to play in Trueloves with Buddy or Dallas with CJ have taught me alot. Randy G and the men at CueTech helped me to shave years off my learning curve. Paul Potier came here for a week that elevated my game even higher. I had $1000 in my pocket for Scott Frost over the week to play him one pocket if he would have hung around just to show me his shot selections. I can drive over every inch of this island and not get that kind of experience. My advice is take the $20 game and play every time. If nobody is comming to your pool hall drive 50 miles and become the guy who is asking to play the $20 one pocket every chance you get. You never know when you wont have many chances anymore.

I am no champion just the best guy sitting in this chair.
Very well said and my philosophy as well -- a tip of the hat to you!

Very nice suggestions and perspectives. You're welcome at my pool hall anytime and while I'm no Scott Frost you will get played.:D :D

If I am in Okinawa, I want to go play pool at B-Ball Sutagio or one of the other clubs listed here: http://www.debito.org/roguesgallery.html#Uruma
:-)
When I was stationed there I did not play pool and had given pool up entirely during my tour of duty with the marines. A young Okinawan girl who lived at 1-106 Kubagawa, Naha City, Okinawa named Ikuko Kishimoto was kind enough to share some special insights into the Japanese culture with a very naieve marine. (And no, we weren't intimate). Life is funny, I remember her name, her address (we were pen pals for 10 years or so until she had to get on with her Japanese life) even what her father looked like, spent scores of hours with her over a period of a few months, never shared a drop of alcohol and never even held her hand. I guess you just had to know Ikuko.
Warm regards,

Kind of like your relationship with ME.

Btw, my choice was to offer to play for $10. I mean, I know I'm going to lose eventually, but I want to torture my opponent and make him win my bankroll the old fashioned way... at $10 a game, it might take him HOURS to bust me.

.

I like it when someone watches you practice for half an hour or more and then asks if you want to ply "some cheap 9 ball- $20 a game or so?" I cant say no quick enough in that situation and cant imagine anyone saying yes but they do and i even saw a guy accept and win under those circumstances strange as it may seem.

For $20 a game one pocket I'd be willing to play anyone for a while.... they might not like it...if I lose....I make it up in 9-ball later no problem...so I guess Yes to anyone

Are you still playing pool? I thought you were making your fame and fortune on the Poker Circuit.

FTR, I'm still waiting for one stakehorse with triple knots, a money belt and ice water in his veins. It could be you. :p

You and me both. I get a kick out people who watch you play for an hour never moving from the bar stool or that tall glass of ice water then as if they were your best friend drop the question on you. I'm one of those guys who often says yes, simply because I am a glutton for punishment. :D :D

I seldom ask anyone else if they want to gamble so they had better ask me. :)

So far in the poll, almost 2 out of 3 forum members would say "sure" or ask to play for 10. The response I don't understand is, to see if you can get the stranger a game and you get the best player in the house. Why does the best shooter get this game?

This happens to me a lot when I'm the stranger. At times I get matched up with a monster who proceeds to mow me down as the whole room looks on. Then the #2 and 3 players want to take their shot at me after seeing I'm easy pickings.

I'm sure if I was the stranger at Hardtimes there would be two dozen guys all over me. Heck, even the guy who cleans the toilets there, is a champion.

Unless the top player in the room is the only 20 dollar player, I don't see why he ends up getting the strangers action.

OK, there are over 80 posters that said SURE, they would play for $20 a game or at least $10 a game with more posters saying they would play for $20. (Let's see if this slows the posters down a bit, although I hope not)

Please PM me with your contact information as I hope to be traveling the country over the next 12 months. Please provide your name, the name of the pool hall and the address and phone number of the pool hall as well as your telephone number and I will put it into my database to call you when I am passing through your town.

If my mail box fills up please keep trying as I will clean it out once a day as it fills up.

Thanks,
JoeyA

Interesting challenge but would you be considered a stranger? After 1100 posts I'm sure the folks here would think of you as a long lost friend.

OK, OK, I'm just kidding!

LOL... you noticed that too ? In four years here, Joey had made about 127 posts and then another 1,000 in the past month. I haven't figured out what he's up to, YET.

I suppose you want to play some $20 one pocket too, huh? Been hanging around Buddy Hall for quite some time now but I will still play you. I'm not scared.

Let's play for $40.

Here's my 2 cents! I believe that if you love the game of one pocket you almost have to play that person a game of one pocket for $20. You know if he beats you 3 games in a row you can just kindly tell him thanks for the lesson. As for me, I will play anyone for $10@game even, because I know at the max I might lose 10 games. But that will take a while, but the knowledge I will aquire is well worth it. I have played Joyner in Sacramento, Palmer in S.F., Bucktooth in S.F., and alot other EVEN. I think F#ck the spot I am getting a deal. I am not rich, but they have "Paid" their way ...why shouldn't I? I just ask them just play their game...no stalling we have to pay time, lol. If you think of it this way... you can play some of the world's best players' in their sport for $20-50 a game...isn't that a great deal? Can you play Tiger Woods a round of golf for a hundred bucks? I think not...

Ha! Thanks for the story! I'll tell remind that story to Gene when I see him in a few months...Thanks!
