Would This Make You Angry?

I played in a tournament yesterday, we had 33 players. 1st place was $525, and it payed 8 places, with 7th and 8th being $40. The tournament is supposed to start at 8pm, so at 8:10 right before matches are being called out, a local player who happens to be very good walks in and asks if it's too late for him to join. After whining to the tournament director, the TD finally gives in, and he gets to pick a random number, and he will get to play anyone who got a bye according to the number he picks. He draws me, and drills me 7-1 in about 10 minutes. This guy is a pretty strong shortstop, way above my level. So I'm knocked out of the tournament, not upset or anything, all of a sudden this guy gets a call on his phone, and starts talking about some $200 dollar a game action with a wealthy fish. He promptly announces he's got a fish at another poolhall, and quits the tournament. He didn't even say sorry to me for ruining my chances to make some cash. Now I didn't complain to anyone, but I just felt a little ticked off that this guy shows up late, gets to join the tournament after non-stop whining to the TD, knocks me out of the tournament, and then takes off to go make alot more money. Do you think I have a right to be a little mad?

If the TD was going to let him in he ( the TD) should have redrawn the whole tournament order not let the shortstop have one of the buy places. you got a raw deal.

I think I would be a little peeved also. Considering everyone else made it on time and the rules were bent to accomodate him. That's not to say that had he arived on time the same results might have occured but hey shit happens. If the TD let him in then he is the one I would be upset with.

I think if the guy who had quit had just said sorry for knocking me out and then quitting I might have not been so upset. I really don't want to bitch at the TD, that guy goes through enough bitching and whining on a regular basis from other players, and I don't want to be one of them. Oh well, I'll play again next month.

If it was a local tournament run quite often, and not so formal, then I don't think 10 minutes late is such a big deal, and drawing him was just bad luck that it happened to you.
However as to him goin to get action elsewhere after playin you, that's what would upset me. I would expect to be replaced in the tournament with a "BYE" in my bracket, and go through to next round, just as would have happened if the late entry didn't show up.

Of course I would be upset. But, thems the breaks. What could possibly be done? I'd try not to let it bother me and practice like hell to make sure I kicked his ass next time I played him.

I've had that happen to me before. I was
more than mad. He shouldn't have been
allowed in in the first place. He whined
to get in; you should have raised hell
to be allowed to stay in. I know why
you didn't though; I didn't either.
Life sucks sometimes.

"Shi*t happens" and "oh well" are not good enough in this situation. The whole incident in a microcasm is whats wrong with pool in the first place...

What is good enough?
Crying to the TD? Boycotting all other tournaments?
There is nothing that remedy the situation.
It sucks!
Some things just SUCK and that's it.

lasttwo - the td listens to bitching and whining all the time, i'm sure. most of it is probably sore losers looking to find some minor technicality or just to blame someone.

but you were dealt a shitty hand and everyone in the tourny who showed on time, like adults, should be upset that the guy was even let in. you have a valid complaint. i say the TD should have to play you for the $525 and give you the 3, haha.

I wouldn't be upset at the shortstop. I would be upset with the TD only if he has a different standard with this guy. Does the TD let other players come in late and play? If not, I'd be a little miffed with him. Other than that, shit does happen, sometimes on a regular basis.

It probably did suck for you. But the guy that was supposed to play him next & got the bye did not see it that way. I would not be happy either and you did get the shaft. Unfortunately things are that way in the sport. As much as I love the game, I certainly feel that there are many negatives associated due to those types of situations. Guys like you are the ones that make the PH money, not the hustlers and such. Sorry about your luck in that situation. Keep practicing & get yours back!

What happened at the falcon tour.

I had the opposite situation at the falcon tour. I knew in match two that I was just too tired to do match three if I won. At hill hill I had a decision. Do I go all out and win, knowing that if I could not play the next match, that would knock out the other girl's chances?

It went down to the last shot on the nineball and she choked leaving me easy. I really did not want to beat her and knock her out but at the same time I could not at least try to win. I dogged that easy on the nine. Part was my own fatigue which caused a silly mistake on my part and part the messages that I had given to myself. She won game and match and turned to me and said 'you were afraid to win'.

I really hope that she won the next match. When I was playing and thinking 'gosh if I win this no way i can do another match', that is subconsciously not wanting to win.

I had become dehydrated without knowing it which I think added to my fatigue.I had also injured my back a few days before and even though it was better, I was still not in top physical condition.

Even though winning would be nice, I would have felt bad about knocking her out, when I was incapable of playing any more.

Anyway, she was a good opponent, a nice person and a pretty good shooter so figured that I had gone 4-5 with her was decent for my first tournamnt ,so I felt that I had done well. Hopefully the next tournament I will be able to go longer.;) ;)

There is always a choice and subconsciously I think I made mine. I think that your opponent made a very selfish choice, but that is my opinion. I was just there for competition and experience, my first tournament so felt okay about losing as long as I played well, which I had.

Whats good enough is if the guy leaves after the match then this guy should take his spot. He originally had the bye and then should get it back. If he needs to bitch to the TD then he should do it. The player that left should not be allowed back in the tourney at all, ever again. Its idiots like this TD, and the incoming player, that ruin tourneys for the dedicated people who actually do care.
As a TD if you aren't in my tourney at the allotted time then you ain't in. This not only affects the tourney, but the calcutta as well. If a player calls in, and he doesn't show and in my opinion it was detrimental to the outcome of the tourney and the calcutta, then he is suspended for x amount of weeks.

No, you entered a tournament and got beat. You were out. What happened after you were out is none of your business. If I were the TD I would not let the guy in late in the future based on his withdrawal because it does smack of bad sportsmanship. I'd gladly let him in if he were on time though. The quitter paid his fee and provided dead money to the tournament so he gave profit to the winners. You weren't good enough to beat him. So stop sniveling. Because you are sniveling and whining. You weren't good enough to win the tournament. That is the only thing you can take away from the experience.

when I ran tournaments, once I did players audtion and drawed up flow chart, nobody was aloud to play!!!!!!!STICK

Right on, stick & classic. I agree. JPB, you're
being hard on the guy. I didn't hear him
whine. He might have got on a roll if he
didn't have to give up his bye to play
that late asshole. The only thing I hate
worse than losing is getting screwed & losing.

I might be being a little hard on him, but he is whining by posting it. To post with full details asking to see if he should whine about it = whining.
