WPA Threatens Sanctions (Hanoi Open)

My best guess is that point 4 on their list is what they are mainly after with this press release. Application of Permission. If they can at least get the players to apply for permission then the WPA can feel like they have a modicum control or authority over the pro game. It won’t happen though. Getting 128+ players to apply for permission to play in every single MR event will be like herding cats. They will need to have more than HeyBall and the China Open on the calendar to make it worth remembering.

yes, obviously the work of ACBS. but it's kind of parodic at this point, the WNT signed players make up a huge majority of the top 100. i think this will affect like two polish players, if even that
Last year the ACBS did get a number of Asian players to back out of playing in the Hanoi Open. It could affect those same folks.

Here are a few reasons why events don't get sanctioned by the WPA. Some you already know, but I bet others you don't know.

1.) Date conflicts

2.) Calling your event World Championship of ....... which conflicts with organizers of actual World Championships with hundreds of thousands invested in each event.

3.) Unfair practices in choosing players. This is big. In WPA sanctioned events, each continental federation receives a quota of spots to be handed out to whoever qualifies through their own qualification systems. There are also a series of open qualifiers organized by the event organizer and the WPA where players who don't qualify through their federations can play and try to qualify. The organizer of the sanctioned event also gets a few wild card spots.

The WPA won't sanction an event where the promoter wants to unfairly control who plays and their positions in the chart, which is unfair to the players. This is a BIG reason why some events don't get WPA sanctioning. You have no idea about some of the things that go on behind the scenes at these so-called events. The players are often not treated fairly by some of these event organizers. The WPA will not support that kind of behavior by event coordinators.

4.) Unfair prize money distribution. Loading all the money up top or not meeting the minimum required added money will result in non-sanctioning.

5.) Unacceptable venue and hotel. Players should have a reasonable place to play and sleep.

you only get trampled on if you stand still and don't do anything about it.

You just perfectly described what the WPA itself is doing.

Yep. Anybody remember a thing called the 'British Empire'? All those colonial 'outposts' got tired of getting reamed by a bunch of stuffed shirt jerkoffs in London. Sound sorta familiar?? The days of people giving a shit about the WPA, at least at the pro level, are numbered.

You'll get trampled anyway if you don't have power backing you up. That's what happened to the women in the early days of Matchroom's international events. The women stood their ground for certain things --- they were right to do so --- and Matchroom cut them out permanently.

...and good on MR for standing their ground as well.

Everyone has the right to choose not to play with a given org. MR or the WPA do not have a monopoly on how players make their choices.

Every professional tour (and fringe professional) needs a farm system. The WPA is that system. Whether they want to accept it or not.

You don't know the circumstances of the issue, yet you automatically take Matchroom's side. Interesting. Do you have a problem with women?

In a way they do if someone signs a contract with them. I haven't seen a MR players agreement but i'd bet that players have to play at least the big ones and some other smaller events. Virtually all the best players have signed with MR.

Here we go, lets play the 'sexist card'. Who didn't see this coming. You gotta problem with men?? Last time i checked MR's pool division is run by a woman, right??

lmao... no. Do you have a problem with men?

Pretty sure I didn't take a side. Just did the same as you and praised a group for not being manipulated by another. Of course my praise didn't mesh with your narrative, so I must be a misogynist...?

The world is ruled by those who own a keyboard and a random axe they can find to grind. :ROFLMAO:

I'm no WPA fanboy but i wouldn't call pro Chinese 8ball a 'farm system'. Too slow for me but its brutally tough and they pay huge amounts of $$.

The choice is to sign that contract. Stupid not to do so imo, but still a choice, yes/no..?

In a way its still a virtual monoply. I like MR but if you're a pro player its basically the only game in town. WPA has Chin 8b and the Predator Pro Series. If you're a pro you really have only one choice if you want to live a decent existence.
