Another new format for the WPBA. It's a round robin format. There are 8 groups with 6 players in each group. Only the top 48 players are there. The groups are made up by rankings; nothing is random. For instance, in the first group, you have the following seeds:

1, 16, 17, 32, 33, 48 (you'll always get 49 if you add the first and last, second and fifth, and third and fourth together in every group).

Now, this is just strictly a guess, but I'm thinking either the winner of each group advances to a quarterfinal knock-out, or the top two from each group wind up in a final 16, like the redraw in the previous format.

Of the top 48, the following players are missing:
Pamela Treadway
Wendy Jans
Sueyen Rhee
Amanda Lampert

Yes, I saw this last night, and must admit, it seems a bit confusing...but I am very curious to see how it works out. I think you might be right about the final 16 made up of the top 2. At least they get to play a lot of pool! at least 7 matches, right?
It will be a marathon! I wonder if they shorten the races at all?

It is top 2 from each section advancing. It says it on the explanation on how to read the charts.

Anyone have any updates? It'll be nice if one or two surprise players make the final 16. I also hope they seed the final 16 based on performance in the Round Robin and not just by seed.

I'm wondering if the final 16 will be races to 7. In round robin, you're guaranteed to play five matches that are races to 9. If they continue, the finalists would play nine matches. That's a lot of races to 9.

No, it says somewhere, "final 16 go to single elimination"

Something's up with the WPBA website. Only one match in each group is reported (the first match from each). Hopefully, it's just a small glitch.

PJ

I noticed that too! What gives???

More results (it's getting harder with more matches being completed; I have to keep going back to my other posts to see who have already played):

Group 1:
A. Fisher def. Hines 9-2
Kelly def. Kostanian 9-7
Smith def. Lloyd 9-8

Group 2:
Ouschan def. Corr 9-3
Nelson def. Sakai 9-5
Rego def. Atwell 9-3

Group 3:
Kim def. Ford 9-4
Herndon def. Minerich 9-5
Hopkins def. D'Atri 9-7

Group 4:
Pan def. Morris 9-1
Huang def. Williams 9-5
Laurance def. White 9-3

Group 5:
Paglia def. Webb 9-6
Lee def. Little 9-3
Abbink def. Pao 9-7

Group 6:
K. Fisher def. Hurst 9-2
Chen def. Shaw 9-4
Rousey def. Metzinger 9-1

Group 7:
Hofstatter def. Steinman 9-7
Villarreal def. Rim 9-7
Steinman def. Finnie 9-6

Group 8:
Ellerby def. Grecar 9-5
Thornfeldt def. Calhoun 9-4
Barretta def. Schjodt 9-3

I would say the biggest surprise so far is that Karen has two losses (one is to Jasmin, so that's not a huge shock). If she loses to Tiffany Nelson today, she's out. Liz Ford has also been playing great, only losing so far to GY Kim in her group. Hsin Huang has seemed to regain her form, going 4-0 so far. Monica Webb might be in some trouble. She already lost to Paglia (who is also 3-1). Monica plays Jeanette today, and Angel has Abbink. Group 7 seems to be the only one where both participants are known (who will advance). Both Gerda and Vivian are 4-0. Everyone else is 1-3.

*Ouschan goes 5-0, Atwell goes 0-5

Group 3:

*Ford goes 4-1 (nice job, Liz) , Hopkins goes 2-3

Group 4:
Morris def. Huang 9-4
*Morris goes 2-3, Huang goes 4-1

Group 5:
Paglia def. Abbink 9-4
*Paglia goes 4-1, Abbink goes 1-4

Group 6:
Hurst def. Chen 9-8
*Hurst goes 3-2, Chen goes 2-3

Group 7:
Finnie def. Ashton 9-7
*Finnie goes 2-3, Ashton goes 1-4

Group 8:
Barretta def. Grecar 9-3
*Barretta goes 3-2, Grecar goes 1-4

Jenn B has a shot at making the final 16. She and Helena have very close game winning percentages. If Helena loses badly to Sarah Ellerby, Jenn could get in.

Congrats to Liz Ford, her first time through to the final 16!!!:D

This is turning out to be very interesting. Right now Karen is in danger of not making through...=0!
I am sure the players must like just having the chance to play.

This has to be Karen Corr's lowest finish since she started the tour!
I wish they had left up the round robin tables, it is interesting to look at.

Karen did very well this year money wise though. When you consider all the tournaments she played in outside of the WPBA. I would still take her in a 10 ahead match with any WPBA member right now. Johnnyt

I'm not sure if this is good or bad for the new format but 5 players that are in the top 10 are NOT in the final 8. Johnnyt
