Router

Routers are plenty fast enough .As for the noise if you can find a low cost alternative let me know because I think the routers are making me go deaf even with ear protection!

Tell me about it, the last time i tapered anything it took me about an hour or two to get back to full hearing lol. I'm working on designing a "router" for tapering that would be quiet fast and stable. The only thing i am afraid of is when i press in two bearings to a home made spindle that if it isn't dead on nuts, i might die after i turn it on lol... That stuff is dangerous, but that is why we have about 2 sheets of 3'x3' lexan a band saw and fasteners lol... I'm using a porter cable router now with a "dust shield/guard/vacuum line all in one, after a full pass i might have 2-3 dozen little specs of sawdust lol, it works. But i want some thing dedicated, built just for tapering and maybe turning squares round, and ring inlays (an indexing head isn't hard to make lol). When i either come up with a design or actually have one finished that works, i'll get a better digital camera, with video and make a video lol, to show off how quiet it is, if i ever get it built lol. Wish me luck

Thanks,

Jon

High speed spindle

The key words in my previous post was" low cost".As to building your own ,you might want to look at "Gortons" spindle mine runs quite quick and doesn't make much noise .The problems I have seen in home built is the spindle has to be very accurate ,most everything ground ,expensive bearings and lots of pulleys to get it up to speed. If that doesn,t deter you good luck I would like to hear how you make out.

I think there's such a thing as a device that was made to cancel the noise made by the router. It operates at the exact frequency a router's noise makes only negative thus cancelling the sound... if I could only find one :D

Anyone heard of this?

The noise canceller by Bose?
They cost an arm and two legs. :D
Makita low-noised router at 81 Db looks to be ok.

I was discussing the high noise issue of routers a few months back with a coworker of mine (he is very knowledgeable in electronics and in mechanical issues). He suggested that most of the noise comes from the fan built into routers. If we remove the fan and replace it with an external, quieter fan, most of the noise might be gone. We never pursued this further...

Another thing we considered is lowering the voltage supplied to the router. At only 10,000-12,000 RPM it will probably be significantly quieter than at 22,000 RPM. And it should still be plenty fast enough, especially if you use larger diameter tooling to increase the tip speed. The only concern is with cooling. Slowing down the router will also slow down the built in fan and overheating should be watched out for. No damage will happen to the router electrically as a result of lowering the voltage.

Is that what it is?
Where could I find it?
Probably an arm, two legs and two ears!!! :D

$299.99 for the headphones.
Shooting ear plugs are much cheaper.
