If I could only have one machine in my shop besides my lathe it would be my Unique Taper Shaper. What a workhorse!
These machines are very easy to set up and mine has been stone dead reliable.
Another advantage is their compact dimensions. Mine is contained in a 48"x22"x18" box. This compact footprint is critical in the tiny space I have to work, and the easy dust and noise control is a big plus as well.
I also have a saw machine which, if I had a bigger work space, would be my clear favorite, but it's 76 " long, which really cramps my shop. Also, the quietist of table saws are noisy machines compared with the Rigid router on my Taper shaper which, for me, makes a big difference.
Another way to cut tapers is on a lathe. It works great, I did it for years, but dust and noise control were more difficult.
I'm sure everyone will have their own favorite, but this is mine.
