Yang as Player of the Year

bcf said:
I think it's quite true. Philippino star players average 30-40, even Alcano reaching 40s. Yang is still below 30 and same to many of the Taiwanese.

Even Chao got shot down in Guinness 9-Ball Tournament.

Yang is just one international tournament win to glory.

What is considered "young"? If you consider 30 as young, then I wouldn't be so quick to say that there is more young talent in Tawain than in the Philippines.

Let's not forget that Alex and Dennis are still 29 years old. Manalo is also only about 30, same goes with Lee Van. Up-and-coming De Luna, who beat Yang in the Asian Games, is still in his early 20s.

Just because Reyes, Bustamante, Luat, Alcano, Gabica, and Kiamco continue to be successful past 35 doesn't mean that we should forget about the younger guard of Pinoys.

But back to the original subject...Yang is truly having a great year, but one can't win player of the year until he wins a tournament with a deep international field. Sure he dominated the Guinness Tour, but that was a field without the top Europeans and Americans, not to mention without Efren and Busty. Yang also failed to medal in the Asian games. We'll see how he does in the WPC before crowning him player of the year. But as of right now, I think he's the front-runner to win the award.
Of course it's just average, not absolute. Efren Busta and a few other pioneers etc they have dominated the pool arena longer than the younger pinoys. (Note: I'm not putting down any top Europeans and Americans) As for Yang, somehow he's kinda defensive style, not sure how it'll turn out for him, but I'll still dump all my vcash on him.

True.:) There is no doubt.

Oh well... let us see in WPC 2007 :D

Seriously, I favor Yang to be Player of the Year... and I do hope he participates in US Open 2007 or DCC 2008.

No, he can't. Until a player tops a field comprised of a large, internationally diverse, field, he is unworthy of consideration. If he wins the WPC, I'll start singing a very different tune.

I agree. And, as smashmouth correctly pointed out, there's still a lot of pool yet to be played.

Yang is an exceptional talent and much has been / is expeced of him. However, outside of the San Miguel Asian 9 Ball tournaments (now the Guiness 9 Ball tournaments) and his big win over Orcollo in the much balleyhooed money match, he has not knocked off a major championship. I would say he is a definite candidate of "Best player never to have won a major." But the good news is that he is young, he seems hungry and focused, his fundamentals are solid and he has a very promising future.
I believe someday, Yang will be the POY. But based on what's he's done so far...not right now.

Orcullo, SVB, Pagalayan and Alcano have all won tourney's this year with fields deeper than the Asian 9 ball tour

either of them takes the US open or the Worlds and they automatically leapfrog Yang in my book

Yang has not shown his superiority outside of the Asian scene. Yes, he has dominated the Guinness 9ball tour but how many games does it take to win each tournament? Two games for the qualifying round and then 3 more games to win the top spot (only 5 games per tournament). Compare this to the WPC, BCA, US Open, Derby and the IPT tournaments and it is like comparing apples to oranges. IMHO, Orcullo, Pagulayan and even Manalo are better over-all players than Yang.

I suppose different players have different styles. Some are good at marathons while some are good at short races. It's about stamina, and luck also plays a part. Just my thoughts.

Another winner in the 2007 Guinness 9-Ball Tournament Chang Jung-Lin is 21 years old, not to mention when Wu Chia-Ching won the World champon, he was only 16 year old.

De Luna has ever beaten Yang in the Asian Games, but in the Asian tours he failed to advance to the final eight again and again and again.

"Even Chao got shot down in Guinness 9-Ball Tournament." - it's true, but didn't Bustamante been frustrated in the asian tours either?

"Yang is just one international tournament win to glory." - Yang was also the winner of 1998 & 2002 Asian games (defeated Antonio Lining & Warren Kiamco), World game (defeated Ralf Souquet), Japan Open(defeated Busatamante), 2005&2006 Super Cup, the 2005 Philippines Open......

Orcullo has never did well in WPC, Asian tours and the Philippines Open, he was even massacred by Yang in the money game in his own country. Souquet was defeated by Alcano's soft breaks......
If top taiwanese players would like to pay their all attention on US open, the World 8-ball championships....., I'm sure they will be also great as they did in WPC, the Junior's WPC and the International Challenge of Champions.

As for IPT, I heard Hsia has received his money yet.

He won in the 1998 and 2002 Asian Games, 2 tournaments in 2005 and
another in 2006 and you want it to be credited to him to be the POY for 2007???

Has Yang ever set foot on American soil before?

POY is a year by year performance. In those years that you mentioned, someone else outshined him. Besides, if you look at it that way, then Efren Reyes will always be the POY. :)
