Right after Memorial Day. I go under the scalpel again for my 4th rotator cuff surgery........ugh, another 4 months hiatus from pool playing.

Statistically nearly 70% of all full thickness rotator cuff tears surgically repaired fail within 2 years of surgery for men over the age of 55 years old.

Okay that means the odds are basically 1 in 3 for a successful surgery. Well, talk about a losing streak.......my 1st surgery Sept.2009.....then re-do October 2011
another in Sept 2013......and now June 2015.........maybe this is my turn to get lucky........I'm trying to remain optimistic about these lousy odds.....1:3 really sucks.

p.s. Book Collector......you make a great point......thank goodness I'm not using the VA Hospital System......at least I'm still above ground.

Active Release Technique.... No clue if you have a practioner around you but I have avoided 3 cuttings thanks to my Bone cruncher... A knee, shoulder/rotator and major pectoral tear.... Modern medicine doesn't want you to know that you will actually heal and recover naturally... They want cash to speed up the process... We tore my pectorals loose 3 times before they knitted properly without grabbing the nerve.... It's not for the liberal heart... But mother nature wired us to fix the damage we suffer....

I agree with this I have had doctors recommending neck, shoulder, lower back, and knee surgeries. I put the surgeries off because I did not want to take the time off to heal as long as I could still function and the knee and shoulder pain and popping is now non existant. I had a torn meniscus and torn rotator cuff. Maybe one day I will get more MRI'S to see if they have really healed but as far as Im concerned they have healed.

No knife 4 me

I had three opinions all saying surgery .My chiro suggested these Indian clubs for a specific excercise for my shoulder . I didnt buy the indian clubs but used two cans of veggies. The results floored me. I have had a cortizone shot because at 68 playing pool and golfing everyday its pushing it. But when it really bothers me i go back to the soup cans . Surgery will be a last resort for me.

sorry to hear what you have to go thru matt
but
if you would like me to play with your cues so they dont get rusty while you are rehabbing i'd be more than happy to help out.....
seriously
get well soon and have a speedy recovery..:)

Rotator Cuffs

Matt,

Back in 2003 I was lifting an antique mechanical slot machine to move to another spot at my place. I gave it a bear hug to move, and promptly tore both rotator cuffs at the same time.

Be optimistic, surgery works. Just be SURE to follow all the rehab (and to hold back if you have a monster pool break)! Until this year, 2003 was the only other time I didn`t make it to the Super Billiards Expo.

Matt, my wife was in her 60's when she fell off of a step stool and severely tore her rotator cuff. She had surgery and then began rehab. She, we, didn't miss a session. She had a very good physical therapist and she did not miss a night of doing her exercises at home The end result has been excellent. As you probably know the diligent following of your instructions is critical as Will mentioned.

Is there a particular activity that seems to trigger the tearing of your rotator cuff. This is the 1st time that I have heard of a person having so many tears outside of gymnastics.

Hopefully, this is your final incident and the rest of your life will be injury free of rotator cuff problems.

GaryB........first surgery kinda worked on my left shoulder since I got movement but also a major loss of strength.....fortunately I'm right handed..

A year later they did my right shoulder.......then during therapy, I felt a big pain.....the big head tendon tore off the bolts used to reattach it but it took
awhile to get workers comp to approve surgery.....so then I have the 3rd surgery (2nd to my right shoulder) after fighting with workers comp for 2 years
Same thing.......after about a 15 therapies, I complained about a popping and grinding in my right shoulder. So workers comp makes me wait another
2 years and this time I have 2 full thickness tears in my supraspinatus & infraspinatus, a large full tear of my labrum & the big head tendon that keeps
ripping off the bone will be removed entirely and in order to give me more shoulder movement, I am also going to have a clavicle resection of my shoulder.

So the only thing I can figure out is I tend to push myself too hard during physical therapies and I am going to just do the minimum required instead of
pushing myself like in the past. If this surgery fails, the doctor says the next step is a shoulder replacement and that's something he says is essentially still
a new field unlike knee surgeries that have become pretty much perfected. So I don't want to go down that road and after this next surgery, I'll go real easy
with my rehab and keep my fingers crossed.

I've had 4 knee surgeries and many other injuries too. No shoulders but I do understand they are delicate. Best I can say is, seek out the best therapist you can find......don't settle for less. Make sure they're experienced, no youngins. Fancy equipment and machines are nice, but experience matters much more. Good luck Matt!

I know that with my wife she had several exercises that required a certain number of reps for each exercise. It sounds as if your explanation that you pushed your rehab too hard is probably correct.

I certainly commiserate with your fight with Workers Comp. After our kids graduated & went on to college my wife went to work at a large hospital in administration. She worked both full and part time but mostly part time for over 20 years. She won numerous awards during her tenure. Unfortunately she had an accident at work. The hospital was self insured and we had to fight tooth and nail for 7 years before she got a much needed pain pump. The deposition was over 600 pages long. 20 years of exemplary employment and she was treated like a pariah. Too many people scamming the system.

Good luck & good results.

Good luck with the surgery and let's hope it works this time. Put them on notice that you better not get staph! It ws awful and took another surgery to clear out and months of rehab. It took from september until April 1st for my knee to be right.

Good luck....take some time a detail a few cues! I got a few just for confidence to get back.
