So issue 5 got passed today in OH, this says theres no smoking in public. my question is this what if any impact do you think this will have on pool in OH. I went back to NY where a similar law was passed and I was god awful, having to go outside in the middle of a set to smoke, just ridiculous. This can’t be a good thing:mad:

that’s what I think, what do you think???

Joe is that you? I think I seen you at BK a few times. I'm not sure what it will do, but since I'm a non-smoker I think it's a good thing. As far as pool goes I'm not sure what the effect will be. I'm pretty sure that with Issue 5 you can't smoke in a public place, therefore if you got caught outside smoking you would be fined as well. It's going to be interesting as to how the rules will be enforced and when?

I live in Ohio I smoked 10 years ago, had throat cancer a year ago and I say it's about time second hand smoke causes cancer fact. I play very high limit poker and I abandoned the underground card clubs for the casino's for the sake of my health. The tobacco companies have comitted 6 billion dollars in advertising plans to educate America that smoking kills. I appreciate it when someone walks away to light up. I respect their right to smoke as long as they respect my right to breath.

Huckster smoke free since 1997

yeah its me whos this?

as for huckster, you leaving the underground was your choice. how is it ok for someone to tell me i have to go?? i mean no disrespect but that was your choice. poolrooms are supposed to be smoke filled, dark and so on its always been that way i see no reason to change it.

Of course you wouldn't see any reason to change it, you smoke and you're a slave to the addiction. The majority of people in this world don't smoke, should their health suffer on account of your bad decision?.

I don't mean to be harsh, but you're coming off as very selfish here. Why not take the smoking ban as a cue that you should stop smoking for the sake of your health and the health of all those people around you. The state of Ohio is looking out for your health because you don't know how.

There's an old plaque that reads:

Thank you for Not Smoking. Cigarette smoke is the residue of your pleasure. It contaminates the air, pollutes my hair and clothes, not to mention my lungs. This takes place without my consent. I have a pleasure, also. I like a beer now and then. The residue of my pleasure is urine. Would you be annoyed if I stood on a chair and pi$$ed on your head and your clothes without your consent?.

long term effect on pool...

I think the long term effect on pool in Ohio will be a good one. Instead of 60% of the population avoiding pool rooms because of the smell and bad health, eventually they will start to trickle in. The short term will probably close down some places that are barely making it anyways. Non smokers have more income so pool rooms will cater to them making the places nicer and cleaner. This will of course take several years. It will take time but eventually most states will be this way. I think Missouri passed the $0.83 tax on cigarrettes. So smokers will be spending more cash very soon here.

Maybe that is why there are so few old pool players around.

The room where I play has been smoke free since the start of this year.
Now, even the smokers say how much better it is. They just go outside to smoke.

And don't let anyone tell you that being smoke free will kill the business. This place is more busy than ever. The people who were avoiding it, because of the smoke, are now regular customers. :D

"you can't smoke in a poolroom???"

because you give everybody else cancer who don't wish to smoke!!!

This is a wind up right?

Great. Now everyone can enjoy my beer farts.

There are many nights that I don't play in the league or local tournament because I don't want to breathe all of that smoke and have swollen eyes, runny nose and a headache the next day. And the headache is not from drinking because I don't drink more than one beer a night.

If you don't want a dumb-assed law to force you to go outside to smoke, just quit smoking. That'll show'em you don't like to be pushed around. :)

As for me, I look forward to the day smoking is banned in the pool rooms down here. I quit smoking after 30 years back in 1990 and I'm tired of walking out of one of our local pool rooms feeling like I just smoked half a carton.

I think the the word "public" has be skewed to include private business. This happened long ago with civil rights legislation and the warnings were explained then as to the long term consequences of giving up property rights. But that argument was drowned out by misuse of the term "racism." Changing definitions is one of the first things control-freaks do to gain illegitimate power over others.

Now, "public" means wherever the thugs say is public. Property rights are pretty much non-existent today. Great for those lazy, selfish, non-smokers who are too stupid to choose to not go into dangerous private businesses, and now expect men with guns to make these places "safe."

To give up property rights is about one million times more dangerous to the public health than breathing second-hand smoke, and you'll all see that soon as this cancer spreads so fast and far that even pool will become a "public" hazard and therefore must be stopped by force.

When that happens, I don't wanna hear about pool players rights from those who support this tyranny.

We don't have any private pool rooms here in Texas that I know of. They are all open to the general public.

My wife, and I'm sure droves of others, has severe allergic reaction to this toxic smoke. I can't wait for Texas to go state wide with the smoking ban. Then I will see my wife a lot more.

Great Post, good rep for you.
I just wanna know how you're gonna get the urine into his lungs???

IMO, with all these smoking bans popping up everywhere Nation wide, I think a similar ordnance should be in place for people that dip/chew/snuff whatever you want to call it.

Nothing like looking at a bottle, cup, ashtray, water fountain full of dark, stinky spit and chewing tobacco.

Again this is just my opinion, there shouldn't be a smoking restriction, it should be a tobacco restriction. Maybe us smokers wouldn't feel so jaded and singled out by these "laws".

Oh right, that wouldn't give other people something to complain about...
