You lost? Why?!? What happened?!?!?

Don't you hate those #$@#! questions when you lose?

Well, WTF do you think happened?

I was:

1. outplayed, outgunned
2. shot like sh$$
3. shot like God except for the bad rolls
4. was distracted
5. other person got all the rolls
6. couldn't make a ball
7. couldn't get shape
8. set was too short/long
9, <insert excuse here>

I got knocked out of a weekly 9-ball tourney last night and sure as sh$$, two railbirds were bamboozled as to me getting knocked out, and they WERE WATCHING AT THE TIME and STILL felt the need to ask me these bullsh$$ questions! And it's ALWAYS railbirds who have not played in at least 15 years that have to ask. One guy even asked my WHY I was playing poorly. Hell, if I knew that I'd bottle it and sell it on e-Bay...:)

Explain this phenomenon, please.

I've tried to figure out why I lose each time. I learn from it each time. Heres some I've noticed and worked out / currently working out.

- I've sometimes had it happen I ended up looking at the cueball last instead of the object ball. So I have had to get out of doing that and looking at the object ball again.

- Focused on what the people on the rail were saying instead of just playing the game.

- Erratic stroke.

- Playing too fast (I'm sure everyone can attest to this)

- Sometimes too slow adjusting to different conditions ie: table speed, humidity affecting rails, etc.

- I try to never blame rolls since some people win 7-8 tournaments straight and you know everyone gets bad rolls from time to time but they still win. So I just accept it as a part of the game and blame my poor kick safing or whatever I should've done to counter the bad roll to keep control.

edit: - LACK OF EXPERIENCE.

Its a compliment that all the spectators were asking you how the hell you lost. This meens they thought you were going to win.

Very informative and thanks for the post...but I was more interested in why some railbirds or other players feel the need to ask what I think are either stupid or rhetorical questions.

That's a great positive way of looking at it, and I can definitely see where they might have been flabbergasted that you lost, or that you lost to a particular person...but sometimes they just get nasty of shi$$y about it, and begin insulting you. I had one guy insult me for ten-fifteen minutes straight for losing a tourney once, and another guy rode me for days about losing to a female in another tourney. I don't mind losing to women, especially when they're better than I am, which was true in this case.

But...indirect compliments aside, some of them get really shi$$y with their questions (and they won't leave you the $#@ alone)...plus they bring it up almost everytime they see you.

Well, comes with the territory I guess. Guess if I can't take the heat I should stay outta the...well..you know!

They're railbirds and not players for a reason. Cant take what they say or ask seriously IMO.

I lost a buck or two last night to a good player. I never got a chance to get up and running. He missed four or five balls and hooked me on two of them and pissed in one. I didn't play terrible, just didn't get outta of the gate. But, a guy that doesn't miss but four or five balls in a ten ahead set deserves to win. Just got outgunned.

One gentleman said "there is no reason why you should scratch....EVER!!!! You should always know how the ball is coming off the rail before you shoot it.". Um, okay dude.

So what about scratches that don't hit a rail at all? Or when you don't hit it correctly? This guy was dead serious and gave me some serious heat about why I don't win every tournament I played in, for a while it got me thinking pretty down upon myself but then thought about the fact that he admittedly has been playing for over 30 years but can't run 3 balls. Without turning fully against him I walked away saying little more than 5 words, it was food for thought but only light snacking and not a full meal.
