You won't believe this.

3 got away

Had a pawnshop and buy/sell store for many years. One day a woman calls and asks if I buy pool cues. She told me she had 4 cues. I said I do and for her to bring them by. Many months went by. One Saturday in walks this older woman with what looked like a bolt of cloth. She plops this on the counter and unrolls it. I find myself staring at apparently two Rambows, one very fancy Paradise, and what looks like a Balabushka.

She tells me that she had taken these cues to several other shops and the best offer she got was $250.00 for the lot. She asks if I could do better? We settle on $500.00. She tells me that these belonged to her husband and his brother; both deceased. We fill out the paperwork and she leaves. I'm praying the paperwork clears. It does.

Turns out that one of the Rambows is a Palmer, the other is genuine Rambow. The Paradise is genuine. But the best news is that the Balabushka was authentic, if a bit nicked up. I kept the Bushka and sold the other three. Should have kept them. So what else is new? Those are the only really valueable cues I ever bought at my shop.

I bought the 1987 Paul Mottey (shown below) in 1992 for $600.00. It is the top cue. It came with two shafts and a jump butt. Just bought the Predator shaft this year.

The second cue is a friend's Mali that I was using for a break cue.

The Meucci I bought new for 150.00 1993. Present for my daughter.

And I just got one of the first Rick Howard Mace's (hand inscribed with the name 'mace') for $125.00

Are they good deals?

I know little about the real value of cues and think the Mottey may be worth a couple of bucks but it is my playing cue so I will never know.

Two nights ago I picked up a decent alves one piece Titlist for $100
Bought two other Titlist one pieces, plus two antique butterfly Brunswicks for $60 each

6 point Guffy with 2 shafts $100
Am currently trying to trade for an older Palmer Model "J". If I get it, I will probably have about $600 into it. It needs a total overhaul, but has 2 shafts with screw on ferrules.

the 3-Rambos in my avatar, and a 6-point Phillippi Billiard cue (has a few problems) for 1-Ray Schuler

I got pawn shop lucky once....
I was retipping a cue for someone and they showed me the cue they bought for $75 from the pawn shop. It was a radial pin Joss West. I immediately offered $200 for the cue & bought it. They then said the shop had 2 more like it...sure enough, 2 more JW's for $75 each...I got them both too.
I really should look in them more often, but who has the time? I could look the rest of my life and not find a deal like that.
