Your attitude towards Scotch doubles tournaments

I like scotch doubles, both watching and playing.
I dont care if I have a weaker or better player - in any case it's fun and challenging. You'll get to see a lot of styles in playing and can learn in any way. Also you can work on team play or focusing on the job instead of specifics.

Try to communicate a (bigger) area OR just the ball you want to play next instead of going for "perfect" position. It'll also help with being creative and finding solutions for a given shot and diverging from your usual playing style.

I'm personally extremely NON-competitive (dont play tournaments or for money) and the learning experience is fascinating.

Good luck, but more important - have fun and a good friendly experience!
Cheers,
M

Is there a shot clock?

If not, what about during your turn talking to him to plan three shots ahead. Tell him how you're going to play your shot and where you plan to leave him for his next shot, and then mention how you think he should play that shot and where to leave you for the next one.

This way it happens during your turn and it sounds less like advice or instruction and more like collaborative planning of the run if presented properly. You might even find he'll pick up on it and do the same thing after a while.

+1 on this!

Scotch dbls is a great way to learn from a better or even equal partner, see what they setup for vs what you would of done type thing, all things equal they may just have an easier route

Well to much of my susprise, we finished 5th-6th on field of 32. Went much better than anticipated.

The thing about pool, as with most things, there is usually more than one way to accomplish the same goal. In scotch doubles it is important to find a partner who is compatible with your style of play, even if not at the same level. Aggressive, cautious, shot maker, position player?

Practice is great for figuring out if that person is a good fit, you're not going to change somebody's game while in a match. So I think it's important to find someone who matches your style of play.
