Your BCA National Team better watch out for us this year

I play for NYPT and finished 17th in 2007 and 9th in 2008 (Open divison both years). We'll be playing again this year in the Masters' division with full comprehension that it will be extremely difficult. I really have no idea how difficult it's going to be but I expect we'll competitive. If not, Vegas is a wonderful place to lose.

I'll keep an eye out for your team in the master's team event. We will be playing on Cop-n-Robbers team.

If any of you guy or gals are going to vegas in May to the BCA Nationals for the team event, watch out for my ontherail team!:p

We are going to win!!!

Or if you want to get a few beer let me know. Always looking to meet new people. I cant stop thinking about how cruddy it is going to be with out the splash bar tho:frown:

You have been warned:p

Hey Steve,
I'm not sure who you are, maybe we have met in tournaments in the past. I will be playing on an OPEN team from Tucson. If ya want to make a friendly wager, I will bet we make it deeper in the tourney than your team. Everybody knows the Tucson teams suck compared to Phoenix teams. I'm just interested in a friendly wager, maybe a beer or up to $20. These tournaments really depend on who ya play in the early rounds. You might play the eventual winners or maybe you get lucky and play the team that can't stand cause their sooooo drunk lol.
Our team name is Got Beer?, if that's any indicator ya might want to take the bet lol.

Have you played in the Masters' Team event before? How would you compare those teams to the better Open teams?

Yep, played a few times. IMO, the open master's teams are better than the top open teams. Some have players that are capable of playing at the pro level, and some actually do play at the pro level on a consistent basis. That's not to say that a solid, open team couldn't win the master's team event. That could certainly happen. It's small tables and it only takes a few good rolls here and there (along with some smart 8 ball play).

Well, I refuse to make any predictions since I've never even watched a Masters' Team Division match. I will say this - we're definitely going to have fun this year and I look forward to the competition. See you there!

You guys are all just lucky that we're not playing in the BCA this year! :grin-square:Due to scheduling problems we are forced to play in the VNEA masters tournament instead (a couple of us are VNEA masters).

Colorado teams tend to hold their own in the big team tournaments. I know of one very tough team that will be in the Open (and we beat them in the recent regional tournament). That team has three past national champions on it.

The only reason I'm a master player in the VNEA is because I played on a masters team once and we finished 4th. I don't play at that level anymore unfortunately but since I haven't played in the VNEA since then I'm still on the damn list.

You would think the Masters Division would grow every year, but in the past 4 years the numbers have decreased significantly.

I forgot that last year they started in the Round Robin play and then seeded teams for a small bracket.

Prince's team is pretty solid with 2008 US Bar Table Champion Mitch Ellerman on it, and others.

Ike Runnels 2008:
9th $ 350.00 8-Ball Master Scotch Doubles
9th $ 200.00 8-Ball Men's Grand Master Singles
17th $1,400.00 8-Ball Mixed Open Team
17th $ 225.00 9-Ball Challenge

You can see the full results by anyone's name here

I'm still trying to find the Masters Teams Numbers but was close to:

2004: 42 teams
2005: 36 teams
2006: 26 teams
2007: 19 teams (verified)
2008: 16 teams (verified)

Other interesting numbers:
Number of Masters Players that played in the OPEN TEAM EVENT:

2007: 119 (+8 Grand Master)
2008: 122 (+12 Grand Master)

Pretty Soon we'll be down to no Masters Division at all.

Quote by Stuckart: You would think the Masters Division would grow every year, but in the past 4 years the numbers have decreased significantly.

A few years ago, when the BCA kind of split and the ACS emerged, I beleive some of the rankings sheets were tossed. I know some people that played in Masters BCA were playing OPEN ACS the first year it got going. This may explain the drop in numbers for Masters. You might want to check out who is finishing in the money for the OPEN class in these two Leagues. Also, if you don't finish at the top in Masters, after 7 years I beleive, yo can go back to the Open class.

Actually if you don't 'Cash' in the Masters for 3 years, you go back down. You have to actually play 3 years though. You can't just wait 3 years and then do it.

Now you know none of you like playing us Canucks :grinning-moose:

I liked it last year. 3 of my first 5 opponents in the Open Singles were Canucks, and the first guy was from Washington State. Needless to say, they all had a tougher road from then on. :)

I think anyone should be afraid of players that live in extreme climates for a good portion of the year.

but I see you have some great credentials, Nice finish last year in Team. I better practice...

Are you saying we get a lot of rain and snow! so we stay indoors and practice a lot :p

Thanks, last year was a good run to the A final and then the wheel fell off, had one of those matches.......you know the kind.

Nice research.

We got 8th (I think) in 2005. We won in 2006. Got second in 2007 and third in 2008. Well, I am usually just the scorekeeper/manager/team captain/voice of the people but was forced into playing last year - thus the third place for our team. We might have to change our team name this year as our players are getting older.

The last 4 years have been round robin. Last year, there were 20 teams signed up online before the event but only 16 showed. I like the round robin format as you get to play and meet most of the teams. Most of the guys are great and it is a fun time. I can only remember one instance of another team and mainly one player being disrespectful. Back in 2005 - a Las Vegas team and the player I can't remember his name but he has this unusual breathing he does. He made comments after a miss, such as nice shot, etc. Afterwards, he woofed at one of our players to play some. Another of our players 'volunteered'. 6 ahead - 8 ball for $1000. The Vegas guy won the first two games and then never shot again. Sweet justice.

It is both disappointing and confusing that the # of teams keeps diminishing. I don't understand, if all these players each year are forced to be a master after finishing with a high place in the Open Singles along with teams that finish high in Open teams not being able to stay together, you would think the # would go up - not down.

Not exactly my recollection of the BCAPL Masters team event. I was angry in 2006 that it was not a round-robin. It was straight double-elimination and while my team won it's first match we then lost two close matches in a row.

However, I agree that I like the round robin format. I have no clue why they chose to change that year.

The diminishing masters teams has always been a mystery to me. It's true in the VNEA as well. You have 160+ already playing in singles plus another 64 moving up plus all those that didn't play plus all those who want to step up their game and you can't field 32 teams.

Someone needs to offer up some suggestions!!

As with most pool players, you gotta pay more

The decline in Masters teams, in my opinion, has to do with money. If you only have 10 teams show up, you still need extra money in the pot. I think VNEA paid pretty good in the Master team in 2007. If you finished 4th out of the 10 teams you got $2000 back. But leat's look at this year. Masters Team, entry is $500 plus I think a $200 green fee. Yea, no dollar coins this year.

Masters singles last year, entry fee was $150 for each event. The 9 ball paid $1050 for 1st. I know it ain't supposed to be all about the money. But for area's where you have trouble getting 5 really top notch players to play in the same league system, you have NO CHANCE. Big citie's like Chicago, or Minneapolis, have a bigger selection of players. Just a matter of finding 5 good players who can get along together.
