what is your favorite break cue. i just bought the fury and dont know if i like the phenolic tip to break with, cue ball goes flying, anybody think of something better?

I realy like the x-breaker I tryed one out last night and I love it.It jumped very well and the butt end felt good not fat like the stinger.The tip on the x-breaker hold chalk pretty good to.
I purchased a Fury a few weeks ago, and think it is one of the best values on the market. I had tried a phenolic tipped cue a while back and didnt like it, but this one is a keeper.
I do think they will tend to magnify off center hits, so some attention to your stroke mechanics may be in order.
Seems like when most people get their first phenolic tipped break cues they try to hit the ball harder. IMO that is exactly what you shouldnt be doing. The advantage of the hard tip is that you should be able to swing at the same speed (or even a little slower) and get better results do to the increased ball speed and higher quality of contact on the head ball. Im not saying you have to soft break, but you may be surprised what a smooth tempo and solid contact will give you with one of these types of cues.
My suggestion would be to slow down your break when you first start playing, and then when you are hitting them square gradually increase the speed without overswinging. Of course I would suggest this no matter what cue you are using

I agree with you, I played with a phenolic tip for about 6 months,Just went back to a hard leather tip and got back control without loseing alot of power.
It's a cuetec jump break i bought off a guy for $40.00 bucks one night when he went broke...

IMO, the McDermott hits harder, with better ball dispersion and more control.
I think I'll be putting the Predator BK up for sale soon as I've never really been happy with it.
As far as the cueball jumping off the table that does not have to do with the tip, but it has lots to do with your break stroke / technique. I suspect that you are hitting down on the cueball and that is what is causing the cue ball to jump. Try keeping your cue as level as possible relative to the bed of the table.

My favorite break cue is my Omen custom. Ive tried and owned all the most popular break cues and some others and I have to say that my Omen is the best hands down. I just recently got a Gilbert but havent really got to play with it but it hits very solid. I may have to put my Omen away for a bit while I use my gilbert
For the past few years I've gone with the soft break using my playing cue. I descided to look at the break like any other position shot, the last thing I want to do is let go of the cueball. So, I'm trying for the 1 in the side, or the wing ball, at about 40% speed. I imagine banking the head ball back in the corner pocket, using the cut break, and going side rail back to the center of the table with whitey....Gerry
i heard somewhere that cueball jumping off the table is caused by a loose rack. also i dont see how the cueball could jump off if the headball is contacted fully. i can imagine it hopping up but landing back on the table. maybe you are hitting off to the side a bit??
I use a Andy Gilbert Jump/break cue. Besides being a good break cue it is also a great playing cue. There are many times I use it for both depending on where I am playing.
I also have a BK and it is okay but not as good as the Gilbert. The quality of the BK is crap. The black finish chips off very easy and besides making the cue look like it followed a gravel truck it leaves paint chips on the table.

I also have a 20 0z BreakRAK Cue, made Auerbach Custom Cues, which has a marvelous feel & the players like it real well too.
Neither Cue has a phenolic tip.
When I play with these cues, I just let the cues do the work. A 20-21oz object striking a 6oz object, at 22-24 mph, creates a lot of energy for spreading the rack. Allowing the cue to do the work, actually aids in my accuracy.
Cuetec Vortex Break Cue
I bought a 21 oz cuetec vortex j/b cue and it hit hard with good breakup. Then I bought a 21 oz vortex break cue (without the jump joint), and I was even more happy. They hit well.
I bought a Sledgehammer II and returned it right away. Maybe it was the 18 oz weight, but it didn't break well at all.
