Your favorite custom pool cue maker?

I'm heavily considering a Dennis Searing or a Joel Hercek pool cue. I want the best hitting cue made and a high resale value would not hurt. Who is your favorite custom pool cue maker if you could only pick one? What options do you have on yours?

Thanks

Mike

I hate sounding like a broken record in the forum. Southwest is worth the dough and you get your money back out of them, if you are crazy enough to sell them.

What kind of price range are you shooting for? There's no way to go wrong with Searings, Black Boars, Herceks, Schicks, SW, and other big names... they'll all have excellent resale values and will only get more expensive over time.

Favorite cuemakers...

My top favorite cuemakers are:

- Mister Joel Hercek for his wonderful craftsmanship and cool designs.

- Mister Dennis Searing for his kind personality, craftsmanship and totally crazy ideas of applying the most outrageous techniques.

- Mister Paul Mottey for his beautiful designs and innovative combinations between woods and other materials.

- Mister Brian Mordt for not dying the wood he uses in his cues and the fantastic finishing techniques.

- Mister Jerry Franklin for his lovely hitting cues.

My goal is to combine the specialties of these cuemakers when making my own cues... But I still have sooooo much to learn...

The hit is subjective, but the best cue I have played with is a Dennis Searing with the ss half joint. I do not think you could go wrong with a Searing, Szamboti or Hercek as far as resale value or quality of play. Dave

I do not have a price range I'm trying to hit, so all options and price ranges are open. I know prices for most of the well known custom cue makers start at $1,800.00 and go up from there depending on options. Many of these cue makers have a waiting list of several years, so I'm aware of that also.

If I'm going to pay $2,000.00 or more and wait several years for a custom made cue I really want a cue that plays like an original Balabushka and has earned a reputation in the pool world as being just as good. Many people feel nothing plays as good as an original Balabushka cue, but has any custom cue maker equalled that type of reputation the original Balabushka cues have?

I've heard more about Dennis Searing than any other custom cue maker and it's nice that you mention his cue with the ss half joint is the best cue you have played with. Thanks for really narrowing it down. What woods were on that cue and any other specific options you can tell me about it?

This is the kind of information I want to hear: This maker, this joint with these woods is the best cue I have ever played with bar none.

M.Bender, his cues play & feel awesome, with M.Capone a close 2nd. IMO :D
Most of the posts have listed cue makers where the cues are not that readily accessible. The wait lists are lengthy (Hercek or SouthWest - 7 year wait) or non existent (Black Boar where all the cues go overseas). If you buy any of the hard to get cues, the secondary price markups will be enough for an a gem of a cue from those who are more accessible.

For accessible cues, I would have to agree that Mike Bender is at the top of the list and would like to add Skip Weston to the mix. They make a very nice cue and the details are exceptional.

Thanks!

Lambros

I bought my Lambros in 2000 and the craftsmanship is awesome and plays terrific! He has a long waiting list and most of his cues are sold out of the country. Occasionally, Billard Warehouse has one of his cues for sale.

I don't think you can go wrong with Hercek. He's a top shelf cuemaker for sure with a great reputation. I also have a Craig Petersen cue that I would only trust Hercek to recondition it.

DAVE BARRENBRUGE (sp?)

If you ever get a chance to hit a cue made by Canadian/Arizona cuemaker Dave Barrenbruge - you will be in "shock & awe."

His cues ONLY go to Japan where is work is revered and he is considered to be ONE OF THE BEST.

Southwest, with Capone a close second.

Capone definatley has the "coolest" sounding name for a pool cue.

I gotta go with Jacoby though since that is what I am currently waiting on.....However, its only a 4 month wait...not 4 years...

Although.....the 4 month wait has sure felt like 4 years......:D

In The Money

All the top cuemakers ofer very well made cues. Hit is completely subjective. Therefore based only on resale potential my list in order is:

Balabushka (the gold standard)
Szamboti (G)
Szamboti (B)
Schrager
Southwest
Black Boar
Tad

Next we can discuss the best chili, the best pizza, collectable cars.........................well, maybe next year.
