Your First Break & Run ( 8 & 9 Ball) ?

So I just started playing the game in the beginning of July. I went on vacation to Yosemite and there was a bar with a table
across the street from my hotel... and that was that. After the trip I went to my local pool hall/bar and started to get serious.

Just a few days ago I got my first break and run on 9 Ball and it was a pretty tough rack. Then about 2 racks later I got another.
I was pretty stoked that day cause I beat my teammate who is a APA 6. :thumbup:

Still haven't broke and ran an 8 Ball rack, although I have ran out 3 times after somebody's break.

When was your first break and run? And how long did it take you?
 
Congrats on the run-out.

I think it took me about a year after I began playing for both 8- and 9-ball. Haven't run a 10-ball rack yet, but I've come close a couple of times.
 
If my memory serves correctly, I broke and ran my first 8 ball rack about 3 months after I started playing. I didn't play 9-ball until a couple years later but broke and ran a 9-ball rack for the first time in a weekly tourney on a bar box the first night I played the game. For 10 Ball, took me about 2 months after I played the game for the first time to break and run.
 
Congrats on your B&R. I don't really remember when my first was, in the mid 80's I think. I do remember it was a rack of 9 ball though. It took a while longer to get my 8 ball B&R, and at the time I remember everyone saying 9 ball was a harder game, I'm not sure I agree with that.

Now that you've got a few under your belt you will notice that they will come in bunches. Just don't let yourself get trapped into thinking that the run out is always the goal.

Weird how you haven't broke and run any 8 ball games yet. I've always found that much easier than rotation games to B&R. It'll come though eventually. I actually prefer to run out from an opponents dry break because it pisses me off no end when people do it to me.

It is great to see the excitement about B&R's.
The first B&R has to be in 8 ball maybe 15 yrs ago?
I never played 9 ball until I started to compete.

I would agree on a bar box that B&R is harder in 8 ball then in 9 ball.
I don't get on 9 footers that often so I I think these two may flip flop due to the length of shots.
 
Sorry, can't answer your question, but your post does bring back some fond memories. I went to Yosemite a couple of times when I was a kid with the church youth group. My buddy and I were playing pool at a bar there and they were serving us tomato beer (we were both underage and I think my buddy was still in high school). Anyway, we played a lot of pool together back then. This guy comes in and proceeds to whip our butts. We couldn't get our quarters into the table fast enough. It was the greatest thing we had ever seen. He was running racks effortlessly and just blowing our minds. I think he finally took pity on us or got bored kicking our asses and left. We were lucky to get a shot or two in here and there but we would have spent every cent we had to keep watching him play. Must have been around '71 or '72, Washington's birthday weekend. Good times!

I got my first break and run in 8-ball about a year after I started playing. We were having a small in-house tourney, and I somehow ended up in the hotseat, waiting for the losers bracket to finish.

Turned out I had to play one of the better shooters in our club. Another mutual friend was standing next to me when we found out who I was to play, and he joked "well, better get the 8 on the break".

I laughed along with him, especially when I won the lag. I stepped up and broke, pocketing two balls, and not the 8, of course. I shrugged, smiled, and kept on shooting. Damned if I didn't run the table :p

Fun night. We all laughed, even my opponent.

My first 9-ball break and run took much longer, over two years. It was aggravating.
 
Definitely 8 ball first. Probably had 100 B&R's before I even started shooting 9 ball. The only reason I started shooting 9 ball was because that was the only thing people gambled in my local pool hall. Probably got my first 9 ball B&R within the first couple nights of shooting.

Thanks everyone for the replies! The funny thing about your story is luckily I met one of the shortstops in our area
and hes been teaching me alot about the game. Hes a strong APA 8, and I subject myself through hours of playing
him hopefully getting to the table once. I don't get to shoot much but supposedly im "learning" :rolleyes:
