Your most inexpensive cues

What is your most inexpensive cue and how does it play compared to it's more expensive comrades? I retired my Scruggs for a $99 Dufferin. It's not as alive as the Scruggs but my overall game is just about the same. And I think it makes me try harder to play better with it too and we all know a lot of it is mental too.

some of my cues...topmost is the Scrugss, bottomost is the Dufferin.

nice dufferin for sure

Thats a darn nice looking 99 dollar dufferin. If you like I could relieve you of the Scruggs so that you are not tempted to go back to using it.

I was wondering the same thing, I think that cue would probably be my player if I had those and was saving the Scruggs...

cheapie

My most inexpensive cue is a Mali I got in the early 80's for $68.00. It's a veneered 4 point cue with a McDermott type joint and linen wrap, 19 oz. It hits very nice and has remained perfectly straight. I would compare the hit to an older McDermott. It's an all around good cue - hard to beat for the price.

and i think i got you beat, the least i have paid for a cue was 25 dollars for a dufferin sp at a pawn shop but what beats your free budweiser cue are my 2 free dufferins :p both given to me by older players who liked the way i play.

K-Mart Cue

Here's my old Brunswick that was purchased in 1974 from K-Mart for a whopping $14.95. It was produced for several years, and many variations used this basic chevron design.A really fancy one came up on eBay recently.

I had it refinished recently (a bit more than $14.95 :) ) , and (2) new shafts built (13mm w/Moori M). The original shaft had split at the joint- but was glued and still playable. This cue is now my son's (10 yrs old).

21oz, 13mm, Forward balanced (heavy joint). It always played well. Very solid. I always kept Brunswick Blue Diamond tips installed. The inlays were pretty poorly done (still are) as the pockets were cut too large for the inlays- so you can see glue and gaps. I did NOT want that changed during the refinish (cuemaker thought I was nuts).. I wanted the cue pretty much "as-bought"- for sentimental reasons. About the only real change was the quality of the finish (I think the original was very thin laquer- glossy but no "depth"), and during the sanding/finishing, the ringwork is no longer uneven.

I retired the cue in 1983 when I won enough money ($600+) with it one evening. That night I ordered a Huebler H-14 from the Poolhall's owner. It was the Top-of-the-line from Huebler's Catalog ($285 list IIRC).

I still take it out and play with it ocassionally. Not quite up to Cog standards.... but it hits consistantly enough to play very well.

My most inexpensive cue is an Action Elite $200, it plays ok. Next is a Jacoby, which I like the way it feels & hits $500 SS joint. I enjoy shooting with this cue, otherwise I shoot with a Bender, which has a whole different feel to it, This cue is $4,550. 4k difference, Both shoot great, just a different feel.

My least expensive cue is my latest Kevin Varney Sneaky Pete for $250. It plays really well. That being said, I think all my cues play well! Even my Gilbert J/B and my ER BJX hit 'em sweet! I look forward to getting the next round of cues which are currently on order, which are Mike Webb, Jim White (JMW) and Kerry Zeiler (Zylr).

Thank you. "Unknown" is correct it is a Frey sneaky. The shaft is kinda fat though and I have a hard time playing with it. I will have it retapered someday.

it was my player but I was just getting tired cleaning the wrap. The white+green linen is so high maintenance. I bought the Dufferin seeing as it might be a full splice and I had ideas of having it prettied up but decided to keep it as it is. I still play with the Scruggs every now and then. In my hands it just feels like an old friend and would never sell it.

Wife's Dufferin, it was 50% when I bought it. Like 65.00 BUCKS, and is a GREAT Cue for the $$$$$

Also had a Player that I snagged at a Estate Sale for 25 Buck with Case, Sold it for 60 BUCKS to another Player in a BAR....

How about a McDermott B-1, bought in 1977 for about $40 (IIRC). The butt is still straight, but, it's funny, that shaft has bent and straightened on its own about 5 times since I bought it. It's in the crooked stage at the moment. :p

I also have Meucci plain sneaky that I bought from Mike Templeton. It plays very nicely, thank you very much! :D
