your opinion on gambling ethics

Being 62 and having had 3 back operations with screws and rods inserted ,here is how I handle this-Most everybody in my room knows that I might be good for 2 games of one pocket or 15-i tell everybody that I will play as long as I feel OK,but I never quit without giving my opponent an equal number of breaks, or 1 more than I get-never have had a problem quitting ahead because I tell all involved the situation before the first game has even started-

Well Rain. We wern't around the same 'old school' players I guess. There were some, like you said, that stayed broke, but more than a few made good money and used it well ( Wimpy, Pete Margo, Buddy Hall, Eddie Taylor, Larry Hubbard, The Miz, Cooney, Shriver, Rempe, Bernie Schwartz, etc ).
They and every pool player in the country came to Weenie Beenie's place sooner or later. I had a ring side seat, every nite, for 9 yrs, and it was amazing to watch.
I guess you have to have a desire for action to be there nite after nite, and I did. I was afraid to leave, I might miss something!...lol. It was a great time for pool and I'm glad I was a part of it. You can learn a lot from pool players, even the 'degenerate' ones.

I was referring to old school gamblers in general, not pool players in particular... But, you certainly can learn a lot from them, I don't disagree with you there.....I just dont think you and I would agree on what redeeming things that can be learned from them.. ;)

Man, I'm glad at my little club we play for a handshake, and every once in a while a drink, which you probably would have bought them anyway.

I'm no Boy Scout, but to hear the attitude that the OP has just kind of makes my skin crawl. Very sleazy and seedy. So what .... You played a few games and broke even. is that something thats worth this tirade ? Thats exactly the impression that most higher class people have of pool, pool players, and pool rooms. Sayings like 'get into his wallet', 'shows me his roll', sleeping in cars, stealing seed money stories .... etc .... how low class can you get ?

I know of no other 'sport' where there is so much underhanded trickery and deception and just general sleazyness than pool.

I'm glad I play for fun only and don't have to endure the company of some that look at it as a money making opportunity, or a way to get over on someone financially. Do you REALLY need that extra $50 to live your life the way you want to ? If that's the case, then I feel sorry for you.

Just my opinion, and maybe not a popular one here. I'm thinking some small percentage of members here just like to think that they ... 'walk on the wild side', and like talking like some badass pool hustler that they saw in a movie ....

It's just a game .... And it should be a fun and entertaining game .... When it gets to the point that some of you guys take it to .... Where you're pissed off all the time, and you have to post a thread like this .... and you can't play the game unless its for money .... It's no longer a fun game anymore. Kinda sad it's gotten to that point for you, I'd think. I'm not saying there shouldn't be leagues and tournaments either, they're great for competition, gamesmanship, and camaraderie.

I guess I'm just a nit ..... And happy to be one judging from the way some people look at the game .... What a shock pool has never made it in the mainstream, and has been losing popularity over the years .... Most people these days don't really want to live their lives like some degenerate 1950's 'pool shark' ... LOL ... who never knew when he'd be eating next, had no family, no real friends, no job, and was sleeping in gutters, relying on hustling other losers just to get by.

I'm not saying anyone here is doing that, but it really isn't as glamorous a life as some pretend that it is.
