Your thoughts on break tips

Well if you're not going to jump with it, just put a Triangle on it.

Or, just take a stick off the wall.

Put a Samsara on any break cue

I ordered my McDermott Stinger with a Samsara installed and I like it better than the Stinger with a phenolic that convinced me to get a Stinger in the first place.

If you drive a couple hours to my house, I can make you a break tip.

Just bring some Penny's pizza from limerick or some Conshohocken bakery rolls.

Yes, being layered they do have a good feel, however they are definitely hard.., you may like a white diamond better, they feel just a tad bit softer to me than a samsara does..., as far as a taom tip I don't like because I've seen one crack on a player once, looked like a spider web there were so many in it..

Taom is one piece thermoplastic, can't imagine anyone having one on their playing cue...

So who has tried different break tips up against each other?
I have tried several tips on the same shaft.
Mezz black ingot
Mezz sonic
Samsara
White diamond
Ultraskin Hard (compressed)
Taom

The best break tip of those has been Tamo, with Mezz sonic comming second and Samsara third.

Try a Superpro. Best breaking tip I have ever used when it comes to squatting the cueball. It I a hard layered tip that I got for free somewhere and it breaks well.

I HATE the phenolic tips and have for years been using Black Kamui Hard on my break cue.
I have two shafts that I got with my break cue, A. Brick, one has phenolic and one the Kamui
and I sometimes break with the phenolic just to see how it goes and for me breaking with it sucks,
big time, every time.
I prefer a more precise break with a regular tip.
Guess it's just a matter of what you get use to.

Oh, and I wanted to add that I tried the Samsara leather tip and found it to be so close to the
phenolic that it didn't really make breaking any better.
So I got the Kamui Hard.
It works perfectly for me.

I'm thinking about going back to a house cue too unless I can figure this out. Hate the phenolic tip.

Just cut it off and put a hard leather tip on it then.

Might as well go hard cause that's what it's going to be anyway.

Curious tho, what kind of "feel" are you looking for on the break? If you're breaking hard, there's not much to 'feel' that's going to do you any good. (Not that feel does you any good after a lone, single shot anyway)

If you're not breaking 'hard' then you might as well just use your player.

I recently got a break cue with a phenolic tip. I was going to return it because I did not feel comfortable with the phenolic tip but I have been breaking well with it. However I can't stand the hit of the phenolic and always have the thought of a miscue in the back of my mind while breaking. Trying to work through it because as I said I am breaking well with it. I find I am chalking it like crazy before breaking and making sure the tip is completely covered before breaking but just can't get comfortable with it. I am a feel player as I'm sure many of you are. Any thoughts about a medium layered or un-layered tip for this cue? I really don't want anything too hard. Thanks.

I like a good hard leather tip, that allows me to control the cue ball after impact. If you can make that cue ball do what you want done, you'll be better off. Lot's of good players play this way. The break shot is just another shot for them, they make a ball & play position too.

Good Luck...

Agreed

Samsara is the best tip for breaking for me. I offers that hard hit with good feel and control. Try one out and I bet you like it too.

Samsara is the way to go. Tried the phenolic and couldn't get used to it, no feel and was miscueing on the break. Samsara is the best of both worlds for breaking imo.

Thanks for everybody's help. I'm keeping the break cue as is. Last night I was in a tournament and broke like a demon with it. Still don't like the feel but can't deny the results. I told a guy at the poolroom who works on tips what I was looking for and told him to take it with him after the tournament and please change the tip. Think I came up dry on only one break. Broke the nine in once and made 4 balls on one break. This is what I changed and it really makes no sense to be but it worked. Instead of looking at the rack when breaking my last look was at the cue ball simply because I am always afraid of miscuing. Of course I eyed the rack but last look was at the cue ball. Go figure. Thanks for your help and suggestions and have a Happy New Year. Crazy game huh?

Put a single layer leather Mad Man Break tip on it.
gosh, it must have been a week since I wanted to reply to this thread but couldn't afford to log in (was way too busy to browse the forums afterwards). And now Mr Hightower posted the very thing I was going to  I can't add anything to this post, non-layered tips are the best for this purpose IMO (more on that below) and MadMan is a known specialist for Hard tips. That said, his break and jump tips are awesome!

Yeah I have one of those ugly Gulyassy Orange Crush break cues with a phenolic tip
maybe Gulyassy released some of those Crushers with phenolic but as far as I know they all were supposed to be equipped with Samsara tips. At least the batch I bought had Samsaras.

Samsara is a nice break tip, but recently I fancy single layered tips for breaking. It rarely happens but layered tips are subject to delamination. I've seen at least three Samsaras delaminate. I replaced a phenolic tip on one of my breakers with MadMan 11-layered tip. And as great as it is (solid as phenolic but much better grip on the cue ball resulting in better jump shots) I see top layer is probably going to fall off too. If the trend continues I would change for single layered tip by MadMan too. Installed several for local players and they have been happy since then.
