What I did was to cut the tip but left a part of it as a pad and then installed the new tip.
Don’t even need a lathe for that


With a tip/ ferrule combo, just shave it flat

If anything changed over the years, I think it's the stance. Since about the 1990's players get lower on the cue. That spreads the arms out longer on the stick.

Also worth mentioning that the USA is not the center of the pool world, there are more pool players and cue manufacturers in Asia and most Asian players are shorter so 58inches is probably just right

Pull a house cue off the wall and play just as well as if it were a $5,000.00 cue.

Your opponent brings in a large case with: a break cue, low-deflection playing cue(s) with "special" tip(s), jump stick (I'm personally anti-jump), cue extension(s), "personal" chalk, towel(s), bridge connector, burnishing paper, etc.

Your opponent might think, "all this equipment and my opponent has nothing but a cue and playing jam-up."
