Hello AZ the Title says it all, I have been in contact with the most Famous Cue Case Maker alive today and I have Commisioned him to build me a Cue Case. Now I am certain that many who have read the title are saying is Manwon for real or full of Shit!!!!:D Well, in this case I am not joking in any way, as of the 26th of February the Famous Chas Clements has agreeded to build me a cue case. Chas is the top of this field, this gentlemans work is the most uniquely beautiful Leather work ever applied to cue cases, he is the top of the craft and his work is sought after world wide.

Chas is in a field all his own, and on this subject I doubt anyone will disagree. His work is featured in the Billiards Encyclopedia, and every leather working forum World wide. Chas has not built Cue cases for many years, and until recently many have thought that he would not build cases anymore. Currently he is only building Envolop style 1x1 and 1x2 cue cases, and he told me that is uncertain if he will build any large cases every again.

This is a great opprotunity for any cue case collector or anyone who wants the best of the best. Below is his website along with information about this interesting man.

Here are some examples of his work.

If you want the best above is where you get it!!!!!!!

Take care

I am very proud of you Craig. Is it going to be tooled at all? If so you will not only have one of the toughest but also one of the most artistic cases ever made. Chas does all of his own art and doesn't use any other tooler's patterns.

Very good to hear that Chas is going to make cases again!

By the way - the title is a little misleading, in the world of mid range to high end billiard cases Jack Justis is easily the most famous. But Chas Clements is easily the BEST case maker alive and no one's comes close in my opinion to Chas' quality of construction or the original artistry of his designs.

John, the case is going to be tooled on both sides, John, I certainly do feel very lucky, proud, and extremely happy that he has agreed to to build this case for me. I have followed his work for many years, and I have always loved the art of this craft. I thought I would post this so that others on the forum have the opprotunity to commison a truely unquie case. Because this is truely an opprotunity that only comes along once in a life time.

Thanks John, I will post photos when it is completed

Congrats Craig.....I always wanted to visit his shop in Aurora, and see if he would make a case....Now that I'm in the Dallas area it might make it a bit tough...I can't wait to see this beauty!!

I'm sure it would be worth every penny. I think its great news he's making cases again. Everyone always says they wish they would have bought one when he was making them, well he's making them. If I had the cash I'd be getting one for sure. Please post the pictures when you get it and congratulations on your new case.

I personally think Manwon will have the Case of everyone dream, but I would love to know the price tag. Well maybe not as i go not need a Heart Attack.

To all who are interested I suspect that I would wait to order a case from Mr. Clements. He is just getting back into case building after a long Illness and it may take some time for him to complete my case. For those asking questions payment must be made in Full up front, the current amount to commision a case is $1250.

The current wait time is unspecified!!

Hope this helps

Well based upon the photos on his web-site, and because who he is $1,250.00 is very fair. Pictures please when you get it.

I'm very glad to hear that Chas' health has improved and that he is making cases again. He made a 2x4 case for me in 1996. It was very well done, with the best of materials, and was just what I asked for. He is a great leatherworker and artist, no doubt about it.

However, I feel an obligation to AZB members to advise them to proceed with some caution if they want a Chas case. You see, I ordered and paid for a second case from him (a 1x2 envelope case) over 4 years ago and I'm still waiting. To be fair, he told me at the time that his hand had been injured and that he couldn't promise a delivery date. It depended on how rapidly his hand rehabilitated and he could start work. I said fine, I can wait.

Then in subsequent years his health deteriorated a lot - much more than the bad hand. In my last communication with him (in mid 2007), he told me that he was in constant pain and was unable to work. He also had financial problems for family reasons. I pretty much wrote off ever getting the case, and wished him the best.

Apparently his health has improved and I am very happy to hear it. I really felt for the guy. But given this thread and the enthusiasm some people have in reacting to it, I felt I should say something of my experience.

I would advise anyone ordering from Chas that (1) you may have to wait a long time, and (2) to provide an incentive for him to complete the work by paying a deposit (50% or so) rather than 100% upfront.

I don't intend this to be an "I got ripped off story" that we read on the board from time to time. I don't feel that way about Chas. I have no doubt that his problems - health and otherwise - were real and serious. From my perspective, life has moved on. Take my story for what you will.

I talked to Chas today and he said he wanted to wait to see how he felt before getting to involved with taking orders. He still isn't back to 100% so he is proceding slowly.
BTW, he answered his phone immediately and was very nice on the phone. Hope his health improves.

Thanks very much Rich, I am personally glad that you posted to this thread. I do not take it a knock on the man, I see it as you wanting to protect the forum membership and their is nothing more important. I will just have to wait and see if I have a problem or not I have a completion date from Chas for the Middle of the year. Like I said in a previous post for those considering an order, I agree with Rich, I think he is just starting up again after a long Illness, and it may be a good idea to wait until my case is complete.

I also think that Chas is a Good Man who has had a Hard time, I have stepped up and paid in full, and I believe I will receive my case sometime this year, if not I will let you all know.

Respectfully

Craig Rittel

Rich, thanks for sharing your story. I, too, think Chas is great guy. He just has had some bad luck in the recent past. I paid $2200 up front for a case in 2003. Unfortunately, Chas severely injured his hand just before starting on it. And other health issues soon followed. I feel my patience will someday pay off with a super nice case from him.

I talked with him yesterday and he agreed that he should take things slowly. I truly like Chas and wish him the very best. It would probably be best to wait before ordering from him... and see how things go.

I encouraged him to join AZ and participate. I hope he does.
