Commentary on DVD's

Ok I have recently purchased DVD's from Accustats Tar and some others here on the forums and I am convinced of something.

STOP F-ING Eating you people sound like cows chewing over a microphone. Not only should these people not be doing it but the people in charge of the production should not be allowing it either. This also goes for live feeds as well.

Sorry just really pissed me off today i watched two different DVD's and both time all i heard was that clicking and chewing and swallowing. BE PROFESSIONALS!!!

I agree with your sentiment. I don't want to listen to that.

I'm looking forward to the day when I have the option to turn commentary off. I know I can turn the sound off, but I still like to hear the ambience of the match. I have some match videos that are marred by weak commentary. And of course there are times when you have watched a particular match so many times that you can recite the commentary by memory.

Oh yeah, it also drives me insane when there is a discussion going on between the players, and the commentators talk over them.

In general I'm not a fan of commentary in any sport, unless Grady, Billy or Danny are in the booth. I just want to watch the match. Snooker commentary is great (especially in the 80's) because they always seem to know when to stay quiet.

I can understand what you're saying about the DVD's, but when you're commentating during a live stream you can be sitting in the booth for 10 or 12 hours. Ya gotta eat sometime brother and sometimes there no one there to cover for ya at 3 or 4 in the morning. I know I'm guilty of what you're talking about, sorry.

I just feel like the commentary is an art form in itself. I hate to say it while I love Danny Diliberto's stories I think there is a time and a place for them and during US Open commentary is not one of them. I think commentators tread a very fine line in truth between informative and annoying. I think its very difficult. I agree though with your though about a feature that would turn the commentary off but that would have to be done in the editing process I would imagine.

I understand

Lol I understand i didnt mean for it to sound as harsh as it did lol. I just got sick of hearing the chewing and the gums and tongue smacking you know lol.

I see where your coming from. I guess it's personal preference as I generally prefer his stories than listening to them predict positional routes, especially in 9 ball.

Interesting

See its funny because there are definitely different schools of thought here. I use these dvds as a training tool so those positional route predictions have been of great value to me. However if you are a seasoned player or are getting these dvds for a strictly entertainment viewing I would totally understand your point.

I guess its just a matter of personal preference in terms of commentary style JUST STOP CHEWING lol lol.

I would rather hear chewing than Grady's whistling noises as he speaks. ALthough I think Grady provides the best insight. With Buddy a close second. Although Archer has done well in the booth too.

Never heard archer before but Im sure the sounds of his dirt devil picking up lint around the booth would be annoying over a microphone as well though.

lol Just kidding Johnny.

I also realized recently how much I like just hearing the sounds of the table and no talking, when watching those corey vs. earl clips on youtube. It can be refreshing.
It's also great to hear players, especially if they're having a bit of a discussion :)
(johnny to earl: "when I'm shooting, you shut up.")

Commentary, when done well, is nice. I especially like player reviews because you can see the thought process and also see how they'd revise their choices if they could do them again.

The route prediction stuff is boring and probably should be avoided in a connect-the-dots 9b rack, but it can be interesting in funky situations or in less obvious games like 1-pocket or straight pool.

I definitely have a pet peeve about hearing eating sounds but it happens so rarely that I can't complain too much. I would just ask that the commentators take their break and eat and let the viewers enjoy 15 mins of silence if we're doing a live stream. There doesn't have to be nonstop talking (especially at 3 or 4 am).

I have mixed feelings about Danny D... I loved his golf ball story but wouldn't necessarily want to hear it during the finals of an important tournament. He has some funny sayings but I found he can be overly negative and border on being disrespectful to the shooter. He's very critical when he doesn't agree with a shot selection. "No no no, playing that 3 rails with draw is totally the wrong shot. The guy just 3 railed his wallet. There's no reason to do what he just did. This is simple."

I like when a commentator is not afraid to let some color slip in there and will offer controversial opinions rather than being super careful in everything they say... as long as it's not directly insulting to anyone. Or, it can be insulting in a joking way where the 'victim' could laugh with it. I like hearing accents and off-the-wall phrasing. I wouldn't mind a little blue language now and then too. Some of the best commentary I heard was when grady let it all hang out on the accustats "X-rated language" video.

In all honesty and this is just my personal opinion I happen to love on the US Open commentary when Danny D will start up an old story and Jim Wych just cuts hime off with talk about the match its absolutely phenomenal. But if i have to hear how a guy is or isnt from kentucky one more time I think im going to puke lol. Oh yeah and by the way Danny no one is sleeping in the street. Cute saying 50 years ago but let it go man.

lol
