tip changing frequency?

I have usually changed tips only when the tip becomes thin & is in danger of damaging the ferrule. I was unaware that the tip quality (hardness) may be grossly altered over time, particularly as the tip wears down. So my question is for a player playing 3-4 times /week, how frequently should you change tips? I prefer a medium hard tip that is layered. Do layered tips retain their relative hardmess longer that plain tips? Sorry if this question has been answered a million times before!
Thanks

Layered are usually more consistent through its life, a non-layered tip will go through stages. I would change the tip when you feel that it is not hitting the way you want it too, there is no real straight forward point, its really about playability and your personal preference.

I personally cannot look at a brand new tip on my cue, I end up filing it down about half way first lol

A lot depends on how hard you hit the ball. If you break with your playing cue, the tip will be compressed sooner & become harder. If it is becoming harder for the tip to hold chalk or if you can not penitrate it with your fingernail, it's time to change. I play 10-12 hours a week & change tips 3 times a year...JER
