News coverage of T-rex?

I just wanted to ask, where is the coverage of T-rex in the pool community? Do sites such as AZ and Insidepool only cover GOOD pool news? I don't mean anything having to do with this case in particular, but seriously, one of the top players in the country gets in this kind of trouble, and nobody reports it? I find that to be very sad. Does ESPN only report athletic accomplishments? How can anyone complain that pool isn't taken seriously if we obviously don't take it seriously ourselves. If I am out of line, sorry, but how can a site like az, which is one of the most comprehensive pool sites, just ignore this? Am I the only one who has wondered about this? For the record, I hope that nothing like that particular situation ever happens again, but news is news, imo. I just feel if one of the top basketball players was in such a jam, that it would be all over ANY bball site. Just curious why pool is different. Once again, sorry if anybody feels this is out of line.

most up to date coverage available

You do have to wade through the clutter but the most up to date info available is right here on the forum. Not much sense in Mike posting stale news on the main site.

I know that the forums are usually the best place to find real news. I just think it is sad that I never saw one iota of coverage on ANY pool site(other than forums, of course).

My opinion

I think the mindset is that pool gets enough negative attention, so maybe best not to highlight another negative associated to the sport.

I figure that is the reason, I just wish that pool people would treat it like any other sport, you know? I think the time for kid gloves is long past. If we continue to sweep things under the carpet, don't we create(to a degree, at least) the same type of double standard that we have been trying to overcome/avoid? Not a huge deal, I guess, it just struck me as being really strange.

I wondered the same thing when the news broke. I was wondering if any of the monthly mags are gonna say anything about this ordeal. I guess we'll see in a few weeks when the next issues come out.

The story is certainly worthy as news.

I doubt you will see anything about it in mainstream pool media (if that even exists). Try finding out info on Rodney Morris and his jail time back in the late 90's, its almost like it never happened. I remember Billiards Digest did a big article on him when he was released and returning to pool but if you actually search for anything now you will probably come up empty. I even remember reading a bio on Rodney that talked about "after a 4 year absence from pool he returned blah blah blah..." like he just decided to take a little break.

While I agree that it would most likely shed negative light on our beloved game, it could also raise some issues that the mile long thread here raised. Whether they be valid or not is another matter all in its own. One side of me does actually believe that any press coverage is good press coverage.

In a related matter this whole mess can't help but remind me that a local room owner here in the Detroit area offered Tony a "job" to be the house pro in his pool room for $500 a week. Yeah I know its not a lot of money but would have afforded him the opportunity to give lessons should he choose and entertain any would be champions that came into the area. This particular room owner is probably one of the nicest and most generous men I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and I can say with utmost certainty that he would have helped Tony in any way he could with travel expenses and entry fees to tournaments.

Perhaps this whole mess could have been avoided and the pool world could have been blessed with seeing this young man blossom into the great talent that we all know he could be. Sorry if I got off topic but the whole deal just makes me sad.

I find it sad both for Tony and for the game of pool that it happened, and feel that maybe it's in our best interest that it wasn't widely reported. The game has a completely unsavory reputation to begin with, and anything remotely like this doesn't help at ALL!

The general public looks at pool like a sleazy distant relative living in a trailer in Arkansas (no disrespect intended to the populus of that great state). The last thing the game needs is this type of publicity. Again...sad, very sad...Tom
