Get the fu@# out there and practice. Play with some good players. Stop sitting around whining and complaining about rankings. "Who's ranked this? Who's ranked that?" PAY YOUR FU#$ING DUES!! Not that I am Archer or Cliff, or any where near it, but please take it from someone that has put in a shitload of time in action and on the table in general. You will NOT get to be a better player by trying to stay the lowest rank you can. I remember when people couldn't wait to move up in the hierarchy of the pool world. It was EMBARRASSING to say you were at the bottom.

Here's what this all stems from. I played our local tourney Sunday night. We ranked a guy a "6". Now, he'd played dead even for $50 a set with "Little John" who is a proud "7." Now, our tournament goes 2-7, with sevens being the highest unless you're known to be better. There are two of us they make "9". These are all races to what your handicap are. You're a six, you go to six. Most are 3, 4, 5, and about five sixes, and two sevens. Well, you guessed it, I beat the "six" 9-1. (Played a helluva set too) He starts saying how everyone should be their APA rank. Okay, so I guess I'll be a seven. That's as high as they go in their APA around here. He's a five in the APA. "Only a five, and barely that." So the manager of the poolroom agrees to make everyone their APA handicap, EXCEPT the two of us that are "nines".

For all I care, make me an "11". If I play a good set, it won't matter anyway. I wish more people saw it that way. Maybe we'd escalate the players levels for everybody. Okay, after all these years, I get cranky towards someone that has gone out and bought a nice cue, joined APA, played for two years without much effort, and has the balls to start screaming about "fair." Well, let me tell you something. Play 20-25 years, five days a week, travelling most any and everywhere for tourneys and action, hoping just to jump a half a ball. Then, and only then, can we talk about your "ranking" and being "fair." If two guys that obviously know they play within a ball of eachother, and one gets three games to seven, then it's time to talk.

If you are a serious beginning player, this isn't directed towards you. Stick with it, consume it, love it. I applaud you. This game has given me heartaches, but also more fun than a stripper, a feather and a doberman. It's you guys that just half way take pool serious but want to win every time you're at the table. Pay your dues, guys. Archer didn't become player of the decade by sitting around the poolroom beating them into the rails, complaining about being a "3". I actually remember Coltrain doing absolutley nothing but breaking the balls for an hour.

Okay, I'm done now.

More fun than a stripper? My local strip joint has a pool table inside, when I used to go to those places...I assure you I would stop playing if a stripper came up for a dollar bill or 2. lol

I think you'd feel better if you said whatever is bugging you. :killingme:

I understand your point, but I guess I dont get that upset about it. I learned the hard way I guess you could say, Play better people then you always, and you will get better.

No crying. If someone beats me, its either I played poorly, or they were just better. Period. The opposite is true as well.

Hell I was up in rockford and meet up with Duane, I think i shot a total of 8 times maybe the hour or so I was there. He was just better then me.

In a local bar I used to shoot out of, we had a Sat night 8 ball tournament. Double Elim. No rankings at all. You played your best game. Everyone was happy.

But back to your point, It seems to be the general mindset of people now, I dont want to earn it I want it given to me. W ether its pool, work, education etc....Sad Sad Sad...

I feel your pain! We have a similiar setup on our Mondy night tourney, with handicaps going from 3-11 with a few of us being higher(i am a 14). Same thing, you race to your handicap. It really bugs me these APA type players, that are so used to sandbagging, all they do is try to get the lowest rank possible! And then if they do luck out and beat a high ranked player, they have to run around the room and brag like they just beat you even! I had a guy who is a five, beat me hill to hill,(which means i had 13 and he got to 5) brag like he won the US open, and he pissed in the 9ball 4 of the 5 games! I told him he shouldn't be bragging, he should be embarassed that he only had to go to 5, and he still almost got beat! This is the same guy they started as a 6, and he whined until he got lowered, because he said that was his APA rank! This new generation of players drives me crazy! They won't bet a nickel, and want everything handed to them!
I just wish they would shut up, and take there lumps like every other generation of players. That is how you get better, play better people, practice, gamble, feel a little pressure, and hope the next time you come out on top!

I am with you

I hate the ranking systems and I honestly want to get better and be the best...bar none. I could give a rip if I draw the best player and supposed favorite in the tournament. If he or she cant get to the table...they cant win!!! I used to always here people crying about me being a "B" player. Well...make me an A or AA. I dont care. I play in tournaments and gamble against A, AA, M, etc... I typically never ask for a spot. If someone offers a spot...of course I will take it. I have guys asking me for weight....are you serious? Do I play that well? Last time I checked...I still work full time for a living....not play pool for a living! I typically go for the minimum in the calcutta unless someone is charging the crowd up because I drove four hours to play!!!

I too have been playing for a long time and only recently in the past year or two has my game really went up a notch or two. I had to play a lot of people and lose a fair amount of money before getting to where I am at. I spent a lot of time in the pool halls when I was in my twenties but I was not learning much. Now I pay attention and I am learning shot selection...safety play...positioning...etc. I learned this from playing players that are far better than I. Often times I was paying $5 per game to learn it! Someone giving me the last four balls on the table playing 9-ball is not helping my game. It may give me a chance to stay even with my money but it is not helping me get better.

I hear you, i think its kinda killing pool, we have alot of tournaments where the A players arent aloud to play. and it just feels like everyone wants to win even if they shouldnt.

I dont like hadicap tournies and wont play in them.

and as far as APA Ranking its a joke everyone sandbags and tries so hard to just make them selves a self proclaimed "ringer" thats why i quit apa 8ball i was a 7 from the start never played 8ball in the league before and they locked me as a 7 i played 3 games 1 of which my captain told me to lose on purpose i did and it killed me on the inside so i quit. never to go back to APA 8ball again.

All hail Crawfish!

I agree with every single word you wrote brotha!

Note: To all the weight gettin', non-due payin', little weasles who want a handout....IF I DON'T HAVE ANY OF YOUR MONEY IN MY POCKET THEN I DON'T OWE YOU A THING! Play heads up and improve your own game, this isn't the welfare line boys!

By the way, let's change the line to "stripper, jar of honey, and a glasstop table, and a feather." I think the "doberman" comment gave you the wrong impression. Thanks for the note, "super."

Playing stronger player's will certainly improve your game, well at least some of our games. But if you remove the handicap system you will loose players at some turni's.In return the pool room loose's out, less players less money the guy or girl that will only play with a spot will go elsewhere.

Point taken. So, what you're essentially saying is that unless the "non-player" has a chance, he'll go elsewhere. Are we forgetting it's a "POOL TOURNAMENT" (You know, where you match your skills with your peers) Hey, I've got an idea, let's do every sport that way. Boxing (one guys gets the first ten shots without the other one covering up) Tennis (Federer starts out down 3 games in every set) 100 yard dash (I'd get 60 yard head start and still couldn't get there) Chance, yeah. The favorite, no.

I actually had to go to 9 and this guy had to go to 2, once. He broke and ran out the first game. I battle back and eventually overcut the seven ball. He banks it in and runs out. A 2!

I worked enough tournaments to know these things to be true;

1. The winner is always ranked too low.
2. The loser is always ranked too high.
3. No one ever gets beat without an excuse.

im 31 now, when i was 19-20 as an upcoming player here we had a $5 tournament on thurs nights. this would draw 8 of the top 10 players in town and got 50-60 players a week. most of us younger guys got killed week after week and never cashed for a year+.

guess what, we all got better and pretty soon we would take one or two of the top 6 payouts.

now it seems noone wants to play straight up and learn, they all want to play leagues and complain about someones handicap when the lose a match. its funny noone ever says man i should practice then that guy wouldnt beat me.

not always - sometimes the winner was "allowed" to win
the loser was trying to keep his handicap down
#3 - 99.999% true....but my excuse, at least the one I usually give is - I SUCK! :p

I went to my first two tournaments this winter. They were race to your handicap and the handicaps were 4-11 I think. It was my first time and no one knew me so they said you have to start off as a 7 which is above my game but I said F&^* it thats fine with me I came to play pool not whine. Both tournaments I lost 2 matches in a row but had a hell of a time doing it. One of the players I went with was also ranked as a 7 and was better than me but complained all weekend threw fits and threw his cue around. He did not have as good of a time and I was embarrassed that e came with us.

I guess I'm just frustrated at the attitudes of the "newer" poolplayers.
I know what you mean. I am only 20 and the first time I played the best player in town we sat down after he destroyed me 15-1 (in 9 ball and the only game I won was when he hung the 8) and he told me when he was young he always gambled even and would goto the pool room with his money, lose it to the better players, make more money do the same thing until eventually he was better than them and they did not want to gamble with him not more. Oh the good old days eh :P

The problem is the american public in general, being mediocre is now acceptable. Noone wants to earn anything, they all want it given to them.

Plus pool is not looked on as a sport by most.

How do you think the NFL would look if the players decided to just go out once a week drink and practice for a couple of hours, then come out on sunday for the game ?

Just like the Lions did last year. (sorry Lions fans, I couldn't resist)
