What is OB skid?

I am trying to understand the concept of "OB skid." What is it?

Is it the idea that a CB transfers a small amount of spin to the OB, resulting in something like "OB swerve" after initial contact?

I have never noticed it. It could be that my cloth is too slow, my balls too clean, or I just haven't been looking.

Is it something else?

It happens pretty rarely, and you only really notice it on an easy shot, one where you're SURE after your stroke the cueball's hitting the object ball in the right place, and the BAMO the object ball misses by six inches...

It is caused by unusually high friction between the cueball and the object ball that can occur when there is chalk on the balls at the contact area.

In fact, to see what it's all about, rub some chalk on the object ball contact area and then cut it in with a soft half ball hit from a couple feet away.

It happens a lot on a hot table also. Not many have tables in the sun or play on the TV tables, but it does happen a LOT there. Johnnyt

FYI, I have a complete description of cling/skid/kick, along with links to resources, here:

Short answer: excessive throw due to high-friction conditions at the ball contact point.

OB swerve can occur, but the effect is much too small to notice or to be important. For more info, see:

Seems to happen most often on 30-40% cuts that are hit softly with top, inside or no english. A little outside english or draw will usually prevent it. The key factor seems to be the soft hit, the 30- 40% cut angle and the no english. Anytime these 3 come together watch out for that skid! You can aim to over cut it or just add some outside spin to keep the balls from sticking together as long.

Basically what happens is the balls stick together momentarily and then release causing the OB to "skid" approx one ball width and then start rolling. Results in an undercut of half pocket or more. Happens a lot in a a pressure game where a player has those soft little cuts and they baby it with no spin. Oops skid and a hanger....and then they throw the cue across the room and scream!
