Best Inexpensive Social Game to Play

I guess our slight disagreement is because I'm stuck on the idea of 'social game' needing more than 2. Like 2 guys by themselves playing cards against doesn't seem social (to me... I'm sure by any dictionary's definition, 2 people getting together to have fun is 'social').

But 2 guys playing cards at the local pool hall surrounded by people (some of whom they know) sounds a lot more social :)

Anyway, it's certainly fair to say cards are cheaper and you can get more than 2 playing, so I can accept pool isn't the #1 cheapest social game. But it my hands-down favorite inexpensive social game, and I definitely know more pool players than cards players if I'm bored on a saturday night.

The other thing about pool being social is that while two people may be playing a pool match, there may be several people watching. Pool is also unique in that you may be as social as you like. In fact, when there is a big match going on many people congregate to sweat. I don't think when two people are playing a game of hearts, a big crowd is going to sweat their game.

But each person has their own preference. Book like cards. No problem. I like pool and yes I find it more social than playing cards, although I do some of that as well. Card playing between two people is fairly popular here in the South at many pool rooms but you seldom see anyone sweat a spade game for more than a few minutes.

I've even seen people sweat pool matches for eight hours at a stretch. Ive never seen anyone sweat a card match for more than 30 minutes.

There is a place a few miles away from here that charges 14 dollars an hour for 8' tables. 16 dollars on weekends. I about fell off the floor when I saw that sign.

Depends on your definition of CHEAP??? I buy a park district golf pass every year (includes 5 - 18 hole courses, an executive 9, a 9 hole par 3 course, and a 9 hole pitch and putt course at the PD learning center). The pass is good from March 1st - December 31st (this is central IL after all). I played (used the pass) one year 182 times (that includes the pitch and putt too - can be played in less than an hour) - cost of the pass - $450. Clubs can be had (2nd hand) for a BARGAIN (and only need be bought once - I know guys playing 30-40 year old sets of irons), and you can buy el cheapo balls, or reconditioned ones.....

Most expensive "part of the game" is the 19th hole - BSing and drinking with your playing partners afterwards. :p

ok, not as cheap as cards, etc., but overall, cheaper than playing pool for me....if I play 100 full rounds - with and average of 4 hours per - it's barely over a dollar an hour, and I play MORE than that!

trustyrusty...Wow! That's a lot of golf! Where do you find time to play pool? :D LOL I would bet dollars to donuts that the average poolplayer doesn't spend 400 hours a year playing pool.

IMO, the most inexpensive social game would be Scrabble. It can be played 4-way, and demands constant thinking and memory response! It's a great game, that is enjoyed by millions of people (I've been playing it for more than 50 years myself).

I seems that pool can vary a lot. Most places around here are $8/hr during peak times, and maybe $4 an hour during the off times. Once place has $11 from 12-6 though and that is what I do every Saturday. For $11 I can play for 6 hours, it's great. Of course I usually buy lunch and a few bears so it isn't that cheap when it's all said and done, but I could easily skip that stuff if I wanted and just drink water.

I agree. pool is great cheap entertainment.

None of the courses are lighted or open 24 hours - pool due to darkness LOL. Sometimes the winters can be a bit bad for golf too :sorry: I've played with temps in the 20's, and the shorts come out if it's going to get into the 50's. :p The pool bug biting me was like a mosquito while the golf bug was more like that of a GREAT WHITE SHARK. I'm a sucker for anything competitive though, and individual pursuits are even more appealing to me!! Pool is definitely growing on me more and more as I learn and play more.....

Yep, I agree with the OP's statement 100%

On a side note, as a serious hobby, one of the good things about pool is that whenever you go to a tournament alone, you can still pretty much count on knowing a few people.

However, occasionally, what's not so great about pool as a serious hobby, is that whenever you go to a tournament alone, you can pretty much count on not being able to avoid a few people.

(I kid, I kid!) :D

Pool you can play with 2 other people if you play cutthroat.

Also, even if it's 2 people playing, it's still social if you play a different person every match.
