My OB-1 broke...again: A penance to low deflection.

Only after maybe a month of play, my OB-1's ferrule has splintered and compressed on me again. I'm not terribly upset about it, well, beyond the fact that I don't get to play with it--I've sent it off to Royce's shop before, and it was turned over with phone confirmation in expert time. I'll just have to do it again.

So, a couple thoughts come to mind: I've been playing with the OB-1 just short of two years now, and the last time I sent it off for repairs, I just didn't play. When it broke on me the other day, I HAD to play...with a standard shaft!

-insert OOooohh's :eek::eek::eek:-

Anyway, it was just a shock to see how inaccurate I was shooting with english, over a ball, or frozen to the rail. Apparently the OB-1 has had the incredible skill of masking my inability to shoot center ball! I am kind of embarassed by the whole thing, really.

By the end of the night, on the drive home it dawned on me; my game came back by a total adjustment in my focus, mechanics, and delivery. I was mentally and physically exhausted, my eyes barely staying open at 11 o'clock (which is a joke for me). I hadn't realized that I had spent my entirety walking around the table, trying to keep my body very still, making my backstrokes and followthrough slow and very deliberate, shooting with no more power than what was needed to keep near my tangent lines, in natural shape.

Long story short: I don't know if I looked like a total goon, but that focus in my shotmaking and mechanics was huge. I feel like I opened a whole new facet of learning, mind's eye set wide, and I am totally pumped to get back at the table by doing exactly what I should have been doing in the first place. God, I want that silky smooth stroke again. And when I get my OB-1 back, oh snap. It's clobbering time.

(I wonder if a thin-walled Juma ferrule would be a good option?)

Disclaimer:
The above is just an individual opinion. In no way is the author suggesting that playing with an OB shaft makes you lackadaisical and stupid, forgetting basic, fundamental, and proper mechanics and shot patterns.

Thank you for reading.

Curious, how did it break. I have had now 2 OB products and the second is the OB-2. I have never had an issue. Are you breaking with them?

Only after maybe a month of play, my OB-1's ferrule has splintered and compressed on me again..................(The snip monster strikes again)

royce said he breaks with them, and that the only thing that he has seen damage the ferrule is break miscues

Just have him make you a second shaft.....if for some crazy reason it happens again, problem solved....

I'm surprised this is happening, tons of people play his stuff locally and I have yet to see this.....you breaking a 40 mph or something :D

You guys didn't know? I'm Francisco Bustamante.

j/k! No, I don't really know how it's happening. I broke a few times with it before my first repair, when I got it back I vowed never again. Honest engine. I try my very best not to miscue, so that is a rarity.

Really, I hadn't even noticed it until a friend of mine wanted to take a closer look at the ferrule, asking me if it's supposed to be like that. LOL. Looking at it, I didn't want to exasperate the problem, so it's hiding out in my case till I have it shipped off.

Nice try, but I'm not buying it. Francisco breaks with a dedicated break cue. :p

OK, "Boosty," but I'm not buying it. One can plainly see you breaking with a dedicated break cue in all your televised/recorded matches.

Rather, are you Evgeny Stalev, who breaks exclusively with his playing cue, and probably has a crushing break on par (or exceeding) Boosty's break?
(http://youtube.com/watch?v=PkCG3q2PDa4 -- fast forward to 9:20 to see it)

If so, a-ha! No wonder you're blowing up those ferrules!

(J/K of course.)

I have been playing with an OB1 for about 3 years now and my orginal shaft the ferrule has broken twice. But Royce is the man he fixes them right up no charge and they hit great. I got a second shaft on xmas so i shot with that one will my first one was getting repaired. I still like the shafts though, They do deflect alittle funny on force follow shots though. Anyways I heard Efren changes cues every now and again to get this hightend sense of awareness.

i've had an OB-1 for about a year and a half now and I have never had any problems with it

I think the commonality here is that we can all expect great GREAT customer service from Royce at OB Cues. I haven't heard a single complaint thus far in my history of this forum. Thanks for that.

I haven't decided on what to do yet. I might go Juma, as I'm thinking about buying an OB-2 anyway. If that's the case, review will come soon.

Thats funny...I just had to shoot with my schon shaft for a few days while it had a new tip on it and honestly I didn't feel a big difference in the way the shaft hit. What I did notice is my schon has a lepro tip instead of a layered and that was causing me problems. I can spin the hell out of balls to get out of trouble and I couldn't get crap with that tip. I'm going to have a layered tip put on that first chance I get so that doesn't happen again.

I cant see how anybody uses the OB-1 ... I have tried using it a few times and it feels like I am hitting with a stone baseball bat.

(I am used to Z^2)

What has made you all choose the OB-1 over other shafts?

stone baseball bat? the only thing i've heard against ob-1 is that it is whippiy, which is a little different than a stone baseball bat?

if you are referrng to the diameter, it is the same as the 314. the ob-2 is the same as the z2.

i like star wars too but i have ob-1's skinny brother :/

Well I haven't ever felt the OB1 being whippy or flexible.

Maybe it might be just the ones I have tried - but they don't bend or flex AT ALL (in my experience).

Agreed

This is a good post. Its helpful to take a step back and concentrate when i find i am shooting to quickly. I know it annoys other players but when I take my time I am much more consistent.
