I am having trouble cutting nickle rings. I am making a 3-ring compo. abs plastic-.30 nickle ring-abs plastic ring. When I put on shaft and glue and start cutting down is when the trouble begins. When I cut into the nickle ring, that becomes 5x as wide as the initial .30 ring. The Nickle bleads into the plastic. What Am I doing wrong?

Im using new sharp carbe tool post cutter. I am Not using any OIL????

Even when cuttin aluminum ring I notice that it becomes wider, but without the bleedeing. What causes this???

use phenolic next to the metal rings
you wont get quite as much push
you can clean up the ring a little with a small file also

This is where live tooling comes in. You're going to have this always. The only thing I can think of if you don't have that is to use a cutter with a fingernail grind and come in straight on the ring. Then side to side a little with light passes.

You need to grind a cutter with a leading point sort of a hook shape. It will take it off clean and not peen it over.
Get yourself a hand full of HS cutter blanks and do some experimenting with different grinds and angles. You will need all kinds of cutters for various jobs that are not sold. You make them as you need them. Some you need to invent for special jobs.

This can give you a little bit of an idea

I just picked this one up last week for $500 direct from Ricon. They had an add on Craigslist. One for $500 (with some scratches) and one for $600. Both were returns.

It's like night and day compared to the 10" Craftsman I was using.

Hmm, somehow this ended up in the wrong thread. Should have been in the bandsaw thread.

Oh well.

Using the router to cut it will help as already mentioned. But if you absolutely have to use regular lathe tools then get a 60 degree threading tool with a little radius on the front of it. Come in from one side and cut to the middle of the ring, then look at your dial numbers and come in from the other side the same depth and do a pass all the way across and that should eliminate the spreading outwards. Very small passes is also a key to stopping the problem.
If you are cutting these rings on the end of shafts make sure to run a live center into the end of the shaft to eliminated it pushing off from the tool as that will stop the two direction method from working as well.

Trying to cut too much at one time is a killer.

Just curious, what kind of glue are you putting it together with?
