band saw question

well i went ahead and ordered the 14'' g0555x from girzzly. 1.5HP @15a

i want the power but dont really need the size of a 18-20'' its the most powerful 14'' i found

not what blade should i use. ive been looking into like the timberwolf blades. 93.5''

from my homework i guess hook style is the best. how many tpi and i wanting? as many as possible i would gather.

john u say 3tpi was that a typo. should i be looking for a 14-16 tpi blade?

It all depends on what you are sawing but more importantly, how thick the cut. I only bands that I use are Timberwolf 3tpi. They cut quickly and cleanly although it is not the smoothest cut attainable it is plenty good for what I use it for which is re-sawing hardwoods, ivory and imitation stone into slabs for making inlays. I'm not sure if they are hook or not as they have a couple of patterns of their own. If you talk to suffolk and tell them what your intentions for the saw are they will recommend what band will work best. They are experts on band saws and will not steer you wrong and it costs nothing to ask them. Rule of thumb is to have 3 to 4 teeth in the material at all times. The thicker the material, the less teeth so that they can deeper gullets for holding the sawdust during the cut. If there are to many teeth, they are closer together so must have shallow gullets which fill quickly and then make the band veer one way then the other and causing much heat.

Hey guys

Got the saw in yesterday. After about 2 hours of set up and fine tuning everything Works great. Cuts smooth as butter. I don't even have a good blade on it yet. Well not the best. They grizzly guy said the stock 3/8" blade is pretty good. I will be going with a 3/4" timberwolf blade
So. While I've never used a big saw like 18-20" I can't see them cutting wood much better then this. Obv they are better but if your looking for a saw pretty cheap and powerful it's a good buy.

Runs 15@110/7.5@220 1.5hp max blade size 3/4" min 1/8" roller guides and a very nice fence system with extra resawing attachment that could be perfect for making veneers

I almost bought that same saw Dave. I looked at it for months and when I was finally ready to get a new saw, I checked Craigs List and found Rikon was selling this one

locally for $500 bucks. Apparently some guy bought it and ruined it, returned it and did the same to another. They rebuild do their testing in the corporate office, which is about 30 minutes from me.

It's night and day compared to my old 10" craftsman.

I still need to order some blades too, but it cuts nice as it is.

Yea they look to have the same specs. I think u did good. U saved on shipping. Do u run it on 220v. Is there any advantages?

My nest toy is a milling machine. Any recommedations?

If you are resawing, the Wood Slicer blade from Highland Hardware in Atlanta is the best blade I ever used. It walks through 8" rosewood It can give the Timberwolf the 6 ball and three on the wire. Only use it on wood. Phenolic will kill it.

thanks i will mainly be using it for wood. is it one blade or are the different styles sizes and tpi's

I run it at 110.

I bought it right after I made my first cue. That's the only one I ever cut points on the lathe with. After that, I decided the setup takes too long. I spent a day getting this set up for 4, 6 and 8 point cues. Now it just stays set up for 4 pointers. I use the CNC Mill if I want to do a 6 or an 8.

Sawblade TPI count for our work..

I was looking at some new blades and I was wondering if the 3tpi would be
to much when it comes to ripping 2" wood ?

Dick had a nice post earlier (#41) saying you should have at least 3 to 4 teeth
in the wood at all time so I would end up with close to 6 when ripping the wood.

Should I look for something with less TPI to reduce the heat ?

Also, it looks like the local supplier can only supply 16mm blades so I have to scout
out of the country anyway so it would be nice to get it right at first try
