Update on the Des Moines pool scene

I agree I'm there for long enough it's like a second job anyway. Victor beat Troy Honeycutt last night 5 ahead one hole, of course I was on the wrong side of that one. It was a silly game, I almost forgot what decent one hole looks like. Vic can get a little weight from Phil and try it again if he wants to though. Bet that one.

The AZ boys are gone. I actually liked there side a lot in the final match up that was supposed to go down. All I know is the game was funded, then the money got pulled out, the money stayed out when the larger spot was agreed to and the whole 9. It was nitty. Speaking of that I'm joining the APA which also makes me a nit apparently haha. Umm nothin else really happened that I can recall.

Jeff L, here are a few stories from this past week I've seen.

Some 'security' guy from Big Dogs went up to Tom K.(guy on my pool team) and asked him for his I.D. Monday night. Tom being the gentleman that he is replied, "Thanks, I just turned 40." Tom then showed him his I.D. and the guy barely even looked at it and said,"I am not checking your age, I was just told to make sure everyone has their I.D."

Last Friday night, a different 'security' guy came up to me after I'd been in the place for a hour or so(he'd even seen me in there earlier) and said,"Hey, I need to see your I.D." I told him that I'd been in the place for over an hour and what difference does it make now?" mind you, I'd been drinking, and continued to have an 'small' attitude w/ the 'security' guy. I eventually told him that it was behind the bar because I'd rented a table. I made a snide comment and walked off.(prolly more me being an ass, but I kinda felt like he wanted to "do something" to me if I wasn't gonna show him. Even though I felt he was being out of line in his manner in the way he was dealing w/ the situation, I was calm the whole time.

So, my guess is that Jon B. has told his 'security' guys to make sure everyone has their I.D.'s, young or old, gray hair or bald, man or woman. Whether he got in trouble or just doing it to make sure he doesn't get in trouble, doesn't give the right for these knuckle heads to get all puffy.

I wouldn't sweat it. I've seen the same thing many times in different bars where the 'security guys' are always trying to throw their weight(or lack there of) around unnecessarily.

If it's still bothering you, just talk w/ Jon B.

I just hope Jon is reading all of this.

You sound upset today. :( And why tell half the story? Ill make a nice long post and tell the whole story in a bit.

I just hope Jon is reading all of this.

I posted here in public instead of going directly to Jon in private (my fav way to complain) because I wanted to see how many others have had similar experiences....and I figured Jon was reading this thread anyway.

I don't want to hurt business; I want to help pool grow. As you may know, my main method of doing that on AZ is to demonstrate how statism, more than any other thing, is harming pool. It spills over into anti-business actions, such as ID checking to avoid the state's rath.

But to be clear, the business problem with this guy is that he accosted me as I was playing (and paying) simply because I talked about him and he didn't like that.

Shouldn't some common sense be involved too. No offense Jeff, but you are obviously over 21.

It was the quick summary version, Honeycutt has lost before, I'm fine with that. I'm sleepy though and inadvertantly forgot to iron my left sleeve of my shirt this morning which looked sloppy for about 2 hours. I didn't feel like putting in all the details of the games that were played, who won who lost, who woofed, who wouldnt gamble, the definition of the word gambling, were they a bad road team, hookers, 2 for 1 drinks, me lending a hand to help the Fenton cause, Jon thinking i bought a drink outside, athens quick race, dinner at perkins, cigarettes, and wet naps. awould have made for a good post but definitely way too long of one. I just gave the highlights or lowlights in this case.

Troy H and Victor, Vic came to me and said he was gonna play this game and didnt have a stake. I went to justin and obviously we put the money up. Vic won the first 4 games going 5 ahead. Then back down to 1 then back up to 5. Troy honestly just made mistakes he normally dont. around 3am Vic won, about 5 hours playing time i think. I dont know what kind of spot Vic would need from Phil, all Justin can do is break even playing 9-7 and hes never up.

The game with Gus and Jamie was like this. They wouldnt spot him cause our kind-of hometown guy (frost) told them jamie plays better than Jason C. Everyone who knows anything about pool knows this is wrong. Then we couldnt agree on a spot we told them 9-7, they said 10-8. Finally i got tired of talking and said, ok one set 9-7 one set 10-8 post $1,000 per set, and play them both. (if you dont know 1pkt, this is about a half a ball spot different) Gus said, do i look stupid, if i lose the 10-8 then i have to give him 9-7 no thanks nit and walked out. (wouldnt you play the 9-7 first ?)

Frost and Jamie went outside and saw them driving and said they left. 10 mins later i find out Jamie hasnt even been playing pool while he was gone and isnt in stroke. Im thinking good, glad i didnt get in that game then. Plus i was mad about the comment and their attitude in general. I dont understand how when you're a road player you come to a town and try to dictate games.

Meanwhile Frost is doing all he can to get these guys back to Big Dogs, unknown to any of us. He wants them to play Jamie badly so he can sidebet or probably stake them since i think the reason they left is because they didnt have the 2k. (they kept wanting to play for $1500) I mean after Jason C was up 2 games he started getting paid in $20's, lol

......... btw Jason was up 5 and then broke even and gus quit him. Jason also played Mike Athens on the 9ft, race to 9 (9ball) for $100 and Jason won 9-1 or 9-2 i forget.

ANYHOW 2 hours later they come back and want to play. I looked at them and said, listen im not putting in 10 cents. Have a safe drive back to AZ. After they realized they pissed off the guy who was gonna put the game on, gus came over and gave his best to try to sweet talk me into backing Jamie. Funny since they left the poolhall 2 hours ago because the game was so bad. Anyone who knows me knows when i make up my mind, thats the way things are. I dont change it much.

The whole group of us had a good time until 3am or so. Justin even drank a beer with Paul Baker last night.

I think thats all i have for now.

I really think there are legal ramifications. This is how it goes down.

Customer gets pissed. Said customer calls the cops and says we got minors drinking at the bar. Cops come and check everyones ID on the 21 and up side. Someone has no ID, regardless of age the business has to legally verify a person is old enough to have alcohol. Fine through the wazoo...I dont think its an ego trip I think its a preventative measure. I'm almost thinking there was an incident where an undercover came in and no ID checks were being done and they got a citation. This either happened at Big Dogs or Stix I can't remember which one for the life of me.

As far as the guy being an ass about it though...some people are just that way.

Funny isnt it. Big Dogs is doing 2 for 1 drinks all summer. So Paul bought a beer (2) and gave the other one to justin. Was kind of cute watching them drinking together and talking ;)

Did they hold hands and discuss Pauls kicking system :)?

The Troy and Vic game, I initially didn't want to mess with it especially while I'm audtioning to be The Cooler at Prarie Meadows but it was cheap enough on my end($250) to go ahead and do it. I wanted to quit the set at one point and buy out for $200+table time and Troy didn't. I stayed to the point where I was delirious by the time I left. I walked outside with no intention of going home. Yeah it was trippy.

The AZ guys lied I never said Jamie was better, I lied to them about how Phil plays these people so they lied in return, can you blame them? It's hustling not tittliwinks. Gus went to matchup school and really wanted to just do a 7 ahead with 2 different spots during the game, that got dismissed but that was the best deal on the table. At 3 ahead goin to 7 ahead agree to play giving more weight, that's strong. I don't know what there bankroll was but I do know it was minimum $3k cuz they were gonna do 2 sets especially if they lost the first one.I'd say it was between $3k and $4k cuz they weren't too interested in betting $2k. $300/game one hole is good action, wouldn't call that nitty. Either way at this point they leave and me and Jamie go outside.

They drive out the parking lot and to a stop light and we couldnt get their attention. Jamie had gotten you guys to agree to a game at this point for the $1500 with the larger spot only, this was a game I liked..for the out of towners. Sooooooo, I make a phone call or 2 or 8 and get a hold of the guys. I just wanted to bet $200-$500 on the side against Jamie because I didn't think he could win. Sure I talked to the guys and yes they came back 2 minutes after I was gone for a half hour. That doesn't mean anything. On the return though right off the bat, theres no action. I mean Jason you said lots to those guys, they didnt say a whole lot...hell they spent a week of playing for whatever little we would bet. They didn't wanna go to far away from the lines they got from Scott and Dustin G. and pretty much everyone else who told them what they knew. I know all the people who told them what they were told and it made me laugh to be honest. For many reasons though they were down to gamble. One thing I have learned and proven(say i wont bet and still end up betting) is that in a gambling situation it's all a scene to get a bet down. You cant always play with the nuts so when you cant thats when you know how much gamble a person has. So figuring out Jamie hasnt been playing 24/7 and may or may not be in stroke was the determining factor. Thats the X factor that made you guys say maybe the odds are in the other guys favor a little but anyone will say it's gambling theres no lock there. That by far would have been the toughest game for him and he cant get staked for the first time in recent history. That's why I say it was nitty. Betting $1500 is a little different then chopping a $500 set. Also knowing if you do 2 sets that's $3k worth so you ask yourself do I like it for these amounts. If not you dont bet which is fine but to do all the matching up, woofing, making fun of them for only winning a small amount of money total etc. I even thought Jamie might have a chance at 9-7 but I like the other guy, can I get a bet down...this seemed to anger you as you fire at me "Havent you lost enough money betting against Jamie" and the answer is no, it was just a bet. All I know is it was the only time anyone had much of a chance to really win something and it was a huge let down. There was about $1500 worth of side action against Jamie I counted between myself, hell i wont be specific but Jon Brown liked it a lot, Bobby had some money to lose extra as well. So coulda been $6k worth of action total on a coin flip game. So if you won't gamble when it's gambling...what do you call it?

I'm thinking, the whole time they were here, I am the only one beside Mikey H.(1 single bet) that actually made a side bet or agreed to jacking the bet higher. I'm betting $50 with your $50 in the middle and a $100 on the side the entire game with Phil which is why they just wanted to play $200/game. I wanted to do it the next day and Phil didn't because he didnt like his odds too much. I don't tell everyone every thing I'm doing all the time.

Let me be honest though I'm sure someone somewhere thinks I am nitty. I'm OK with that. I think everyone here is a nit. Jason C., Jimmy and Rick G. no they don't count at all in fact if there was a game I could get someone to be able to beat him Chance at, I would only deal with him exclusively...I do think everyone else is a nit though. Maybe I've only been around Go Offs but people will bet high, lose, and then bet higher where I was.

Tired of typing but I will pose this question. If Shane was up $30k on Scott Frost playing bar box 9 ball....would any of you actually bet on Scott Frost? Real life is the reverse and I'm gonna put it down on SVB...think about it.

I agree some people are that way, but it amazes me how many people are that way in a customer service setting. It happens a lot at this place.

Those guys work pretty darn hard too, I know I couldnt do what they do. I can do what Jon Brown does though...Jon let me run the place on your days off????? I'll do it cheap for like $150/night on the weekends. Vote for me.

I agree, we're all nits.
I agree i have no heart.

In hindsight i should have told them if you wanna play 10-8 (your spot) we will bet $500. If you wanna play 9-7 (our spot) we will bet $1,000.

Then heard the 30 mins of excuses, i just dont like to take that much time to match up. Make a game and play or dont, either way is fine with me dont waste my time though.

It's not that im always looking for a lock. Im just not gonna let an out of towner come here and rob us. You wanted to be part of our side remember? Can we all be friends while these guys are here and try to bust them you said to me. Then the first chance there is gonna be a big set you're jumping ship, lol.

Judging from the comments today, i guess you're back on the other side of the fence. Which is fine with me, I still like the action that is around when you are at Big Dogs. And i would rather quit gambling with you than to see it end.

btw, when can we meet up ? I have to go to dogs tonight to give CJ his cue back that Vic used.

I'll be by there today a little before 5...CJ normally gets there about then. I wanna shoot a ball in the hole. I have one side...my side. This isn't gang turf or anything.

Sucks just watching all the time dont it?

Ok ill stop in around then. Taking the wife out to dinner tonight.

No first chance was Mikey in the box, everyone just watched and bet nothing. Then Jody plays. I'm in the middle and on the rail for the majority of all of that. Phil plays and ask if you guys want some of a big set and I'm looking at a 10%-20% go in that feels more like a tax then a chip in. Jason Chance was supposed to be bigger. So no I didnt feel any unity whatsoever. What I saw were people looking for spots to try it some and get out fast. Why wouldnt I do whatever I want in that case, besides I just met those dudes but I like them more than Jamie near a pool table. Besides I know the road dudes were hungry for some money, Jamie plays with not regard or urgency for others' bank rolls.
