IPods and Playing Pool

Most of the time it's used for it's intended reason is when we are COMPETING, not the social hour. In my opinion there should only be a couple of things said at the table like "push" or "can we get someone to watch this hit?", if we can get people to do that then maybe we wouldn't need Ipods.

I only use my ipod when Im gambling, or playing in an important tourney I really wanna perform well in.
I have only had one issue where someone said they wanted to get someone to watcha hit while I was shooting, but the two balls were like a foot away and could never be a bad hit, at that time i realized it was just a shark move.
I keep a good eye on my opponent while im sitting so there is never a issue with someone saying something without me noticing.

I think people on here that make excuses as to it being disrespectful etc are just making excuses because they dont like it for what reason im not sure

In a tournament doesnt everyone wanna see people perform at a high level? I think an ipod can help put people in a comfort zone to achieve better performance

I do not own a IPOD, and think I would not own an IPOD. I have a Car Radio to listen to music on the Radio, and it has a DVD Player, see no reason to own a IPOD.

True, very true. I started wearing mine because people want to chat while shooting a match.

I say if someone wants to wear them more power to them. Just like in poker, people like to use headphones to drain out background noise. This improve focus. It also takes the sharking aspect out since someone cant shark you very well if you cant hear them.

you make a great point about poker players wearing them, i mean cmon if poker players can wear em then why not pool players?

Pool is really 1 man game, what the other guy does has no bearing on you as long as he's not sharking you. It's you vs. the table. I could give a crap what he's listening to, what he's wearing, what he's eating, what balls he sank while he was shooting, etc.

I only care about my personal performance. The other guy is just there to rack for me.

If you get sharked by the apparent lack of respect, try to look at things without you at the center of the equation. He doesn't do it to piss you off, so why take it personally? He has his own reasons and these are usually perfectly legit reasons that have nothing to do with you. Unless he does it because you have talked too much to him in the past and it was sharking him.

At least with an ipod on he's less likely to talk to you.

I guess you guys are right, what does it matter. I guess just being older, it never occurred when I first started playing. I concede. What I won't concede is my son or daughter using them in the car for trips around town (I like to hear how their day went), but with long trips they can go nuts.

I'm old school, I find it rude....kinda like having your elbows on the dinner table or talking on your cell phone at your table in a restaurant.....

The only thing I don't like about it is when they start singing along to the music their listening to while I'm shoting.

I hate it and think its rude. I cant believe how many things have to be repeated over and over. My 2 rules for gambling are, no texting and no ipod. You wanna play pool, then do it.

as far as it being rude or making pool more anti-social i don't think it is or does. i think it's rude for people to try and shark me while i'm trying to concentrate and the mp3 takes that away from them. now i will admit i find myself being more considerate of my surroundings when i have it on so i am not in ohther players way, and as i have said if it's a call shot game i pay attention when my opponent is shooting and remove an earpiece. i have always watched the table, music or not, to make sure i am not getting screwed. and i am anti social on the table anyway. people around here started calling me evil for no other reason than when i play i don't care how much i like you, how much we have talked and joked around before the match, how much we will talk and laugh after the match, shut your f*ck*ing mouth during the match and play. when i am trying to win, tournament, league or the small amounts i gamble for,and me putting my headphones in helps convey that message without me having to say it to you, life is better for everyone.

Not much to add here really.....

There is absolutely no reason on earth that you should think wearing MP3 devices are rude! If this bothers you then the regular hoop la in the average pool room should drive you insane! The people here who want to chat it up while playing a match are the ones that are rude to say the least. Whats next? Clothing? Equipment? Play the game... if there is a question then it's on him. I use them to help me concentrate. Beats the drunken free for all on the Karaoke mike singing "Stairway To Heaven" for the 16th time or "Pimp Juice" on the jukebox (lovely tune btw). It even beats my oponent *****ing and Moaning to me everytime he misses. What on earth does it matter what I have on my ears or not?

I don't know about iPods.

One time though I got a Kazoo from my office as a birthday present. I put it in my mouth and 'kazooed' while I was shooting. I shot great. I decided to keep doing it, but only on my turn. I figured I could be the 'Kazoo Kid' and folks near and far would know who I was.
It would be like:
Man, I played this guy in Denver and lost a ton of money.
Oh yeah? Did he play the kazoo?
Yeah, Yeah he did! That was the guy.
Yeah, you can tell your grandkids that you played the Kazoo Kid.
Wow. I should have gotten his autograph.

I stopped using it after an incident with a rough character which included a trip to the emergency room that is listed as an urban legend on snopes.com. :(

Seriously. Who cares what your opponent does? I'm old school because I tried using a sony walkman once. I didn't like it because it breaks the continuity of the sounds around me and prevents me from getting in the zone. Now I feed off the atmospheric sounds and don't consciously notice them. Even Karaoke. In fact, the worse the music is, the better for me because it bugs easily-annoyed chaps and makes them easy money.

The only problem I have as a TD with Ipods or MP3 players is the squeaky noise that comes when the volume is turned up too loud. I just warn the players that this is a distraction and just keep the level down.

Of course all I do is run weekly and monthly tournaments. RETAIL sales are based on these regular players continuing to spend money while they are within the walls of the pool room.

They can also drink and eat while playing matches. No one has ever complained that someone was eating while playing.

Now when they start SINGING 'ROXANNE' that's for a different post

WHAT DO YOU HAVE AGAINST ROXANNE? :)

I personally don't like them just because if I indicate a shot or safety I don't like the extra energy used to verify that the person heard me.

I also don't like the "Did u call that" questions cuz they were not watching or couldn't hear me.

I just prefer not to have them around during competition.

I was at a Blind Draw Scotch Double tourney this past weekend and witnessed a player with them on. It was actually funny to watch his partner lay his stick across the table to prevent the shot cuz his partner couldn't hear loudly saying "Time Out"

I tend to agree with the "it's rude" frame of mind. Maybe not intentionally rude...but I guess I'm a little old-school when it comes to playing an opponent.

Now...if I'm by myself, just practicing or goofing off, I love having the iPod. I can pick my own music, instead of the venue picking it for me. I can select the songs that fit my mood (yes, I HAVE listened to Werewolf of London on it, from time to time :o ), and I know that the stuff I have on it all fits my personal tastes.

The second I get into a game/set with someone else, the iPod goes back in the case. Doesn't matter if you like the person or not...it's a socially interactive game that includes, at a minimum, a couple periods of communication. Kinda hard to talk with somebody when they're jammin' away on their MP3 player.

I see people doing it all the time...and I don't much care, either way. For me, though...the iPod stays in when I'm alone, and gets put away if I'm in a game with somebody else.

I think IPODS are VERY rude, but to each their own. I like to twirl my cue, and pretend it's a samarai sword, while singing Warewolves of London. Some people think that is rude.:D

I couldn't care less if someone uses one during practice but during a match, I'd like to smack them in the mouth. Very disrespectful to your opponent....in my opinion. Cell phones too. If you're going to shoot pool put your phone away. The only time a phone won't bother me is if the person tells me "Hey, I'm expecting a call....." Other than that, leave it in the car.

Its rude to use an ipod... but smacking mouths isn't? I'm old school and use an ipod.... what does being old school actually have anything to do with an ipod? I just read a post where they said pool was a socially active game! When your in a tournament or gambling being social is RUDE!

Hope some of you don't play me then... might get ugly.

The Spirit of the game

Sigh,

It seems like everywhere you go and anyplace you turn people are finding new parts of our lives to jam a small electronic device into. First, electronic wristwatches to replace the perfectly functional sundial. Then TV's built into refrigerators, because it's too much to have to turn away from the counter top TV or, Heaven forbid, go into an adjacent room lacking the babblebox. And now the crown jewels in the digital crown; people walking down the street, eyes glued and ears plugged into the magic box. They use their technology to prevent interaction with the real world so they can "interact" with their friends, some of whom they have actually "met".

And now it's in the poolrooms

I heartily endorse the right of any individual to pursue any activity that brings them pleasure, so long as it does not result in the lessening of someone else's pleasure. That being said, I fully support the right of these individuals to walk blindly in front of a city bus. I will shed not a tear, but instead feel a swell of pride that I live in a country that allows people such freedom.

And here's what I've seen:

Pros-People who are practicing by themselves can drown out the noise around them and focus on improving aspects of their game. This can free them from distractions and improve mental clarity, which leads to a loosening of body and in general a greater chance of succeeding at practice. Players improve their skills, the game gets more highly skilled individuals who will be good ambassadors for the sport and all is right in the jungle.

Cons-People who for some unfathomable reason have decided they do not need to interact with their fellow players, despite the fact that they are playing at minimum a two person (often up to a many as ten or fifteen) competitive game. Being courteous and respectful, a gentleman or woman, was once a hallmark of our games. This went so far as to discourage cheering and clapping in favor of a few finger snaps or light taps on the shaft. But because nothing in the universe is static these are no longer the norms. Loud music and raucous behavior are the new standard. For these reason's I could almost encourage the use of mp3 players, the Izombies tend to be quiet and well-behaved if a little unobservant which is frustrating but ultimately not such a big deal.

But...

RESPECT AND PROPER BEHAVIOR is what will lift our game out of the stereotypical smoke filled bar, with it's lascivious women and degenerate men. Pool can then enter the light filled arena of Respectable Sports, a place it deserves being longer practiced in this country than our national pastime. By inserting those earbuds you have made a social statement, 'Even though I am physically here right now playing this interactive game with you (or more), I do not feel the need to interact with my surroundings, or for that matter you personally'. You will then list a whole host of reasons that justify your actions but only amount to so much whining. Music wrong type or too loud, other people actually talking or !Gasp! someone commenting on your game. These are all parts of the environment that we have chosen to be in. Learning to be comfortable in your surroundings, no matter what they be, is one of the attributes that separates the wheat from the chaff. And what if your opponent is not facing you to verify that he heard you? Should your opponent be required to face you during all verbal communications? Because of your choice? I think not. And the same goes for poker players; interacting with your opponents is more than half the game since the cards fall randomly. In pool we can choose what happens, and I chose to interact with my fellow players with respect and sportsmanship. Which is what I expect in return.

I thank everyone for bearing with me during this rant and hope your day goes better than expected.

I'm guessing you didn't understand the "smack them in the mouth comment". It was meant to convey how much it bothers me, I didn't mean I would actually smack someone in the mouth.

It's rude, plain and simple.
