Update on the Des Moines pool scene

Mikey, I picture you sitting up in one of those throne-like chairs, wearing a long pimp coat, and two stacks of money beside you. Every money ball they make, they bring you ten percent. Kind of like a Mike Tyson, Don King event where King makes as much as Tyson.

LOL I wish, there really are guys that can play some pool here, there just isnt enough going on that pushes them to want to play hard. I mean 5 and 10 buck tourneys dont really make people wanna practice during the week. When you put up $50 it becomes more serious. Also like you and I know, when all the heavyweights get in the same spot, a fight is gonna break out...they call that ACTION boys. The dollar amounts are kinda irrelavent, the matchups are what it is all about for me. Besides people like seeing others and themselves perform at high levels.

Mike B. glad you brought that up, I already have a resolution for that. The first 5 times you play, you will have to be an "A" player. If you finish in the bottom 75% the majority of the time you will become a "B" player. At the players meeting though I am gonna strongly suggest that we do this thing heads up. .

I'd rather see you start a few out as 'B' and then if finish in top 25%, they get upgraded to "A".

Or just play heads up.

Id have to agree. You are more likely to get more B players like myself if you go the other route. Rewarding good play instead of making someone dumping $250 for 5 times to go down to a B and still not necessarily gaurantee any money anytime soon in it.

I've decided that Frost should run this like a bookie. Making odds on players to give the rail something to bet on. If the favorite is Athens then make him even money or even 1:2 then make the worst player something sick like 10:1 And everyone would have to bet the same, so like $20 bets always. I dont know the correct odds and all that.

Just an idea anyway

Was just thinking it would give people a reason to come watch, and if people are watching then other people might be playing or atleast trying to match up.

ring game rules

What would the rules be? Seems like anywhere you go there are different variations. How would fouls work? Would a player be able to push out and then the following player has the option to shoot?

And regarding the handicap, there are some players that are clearly A's, there are some that are clearly B's, it's the players that are borderline that would be the hardest to rate.

And then, last but not least, after I get beat out of the ring game tournament I would like to match up playing One pocket or 9 ball on a Diamond 9 footer. Anyone interested?

If you offer me 10 6 I will probably play you some cheap one pocket sets. Nothing too pricey, more for practice purposes.

I usually only play by the game in one pocket. I am looking to play $20-$50 per game, but if I can't find any of that, I would be willing to play some $10 a game at 10-6.

Sounds good Mike. Let me know. Frost, whats an ETA on trying to pull all this together?

So, Mike what's this idea you have? I don't have time to read back on it now, but I'm curious.

What's new Locksmith? 5K, what?

Been traveling and on business all damn day. Here's the deal boys. I talked a couple things over tonite with a good friend of mine. Here's what we came up with.

I wanna have a players meeting at 4 PM on Saturday to go over all the rules. At this players meeting, the players will decide amongst a clear consensus who the B players are. The B players will start with 13 chips basically giving them a 3 game advantage during the first ante. This is a fair spot, 1 or 2 games will play too close to an A player and not be much of a leveling tool. I'll have final say and please believe I will be as fair as possible. The game will go off on Saturday with a $50 buy in. If folks would like to bet on the rail or even have a calcutta for the ring game we can do this as well. If we agree on a calcutta I will ask all players to post the first bid on themselves for $5 and all players will have the option to buy half of themselves.

On to the rules. The game will be 10 ball.
1)All balls made on a legal break will stay down. If a player scratches on break all balls made will be spotted.
2)Intentional fouls WILL be allowed to start with, they must be announced before the shot takes place otherwise it will result in a loss of turn. I think the stakes are high enough that if the person before you shoots you a dog you can at least roll out and hope the next player does not want the shot. This is a great rule for this game.
3)All scratches will be played with ball in hand inside the kitchen only.
4)If a scratch occurs and any ball is pocketed it is automatically spotted.
5)If the next ball in play is behind the head string after a scratch it shall be spotted. Basically we are spotting all balls that are pocketed during a foul.
6)At no time in the game will any player be given ball in hand anywhere on the table on a fould shot, the cue is to be played where it lies at all times.
7) An incoming shooter always has the option to make the previous shooter attempt another shot if any foul or scratch occured on the previous turn, this includes intentional safeties.
8)The 10 ball will be played wild, no need to call the last ball. I think this is fair because there will be varying levels of skill in the game being played.
9)Jump cues will be allowed
10)Players may change cue sticks as necessary, breaking down a cue is not quitting.
11)5 minute time outs will be taken after every hour of play, I'm a smoker and this hurts me but the game needs to move along I expect it to take 4-5 hours before it goes heads up.
12)Players are highly discouraged to chop it up at the end as it is unfair to the other tournament participants, a ring game tourney must be played as individual as possible. If players split it, who's to say they didn't intentionally pad someones chip count as well. Integrity is paramount in this game.
13)Winner of the previous game will always break the next game.
14)There will be a redraw after every single ante change.
15)A Players will start with 10 chips and B players will start with 13 chips.
16)Any sharking will not be tolerated, please respect your fellow players. I'll probably have to eject myself and I am fully aware of this. I will kick myself out if I am not being courteous to the other players.
17)IPODs and headphones will be allowed.
18)Cue ball fouls only and all moved object balls are to be moved as close to their original position as possible. If this becomes a problem we will simply not move balls back if they are moved.
19)Neutral rackers will be utilized where possible to ensure players recieve fair racks. If no neutral racker is available, THE SHOOTER AFTER THE BREAKER will rack the balls NOT THE PERSON WHO LEFT THE BREAKER THE OUT. This rule is in place because bad racks in a ring game are a common practice and will not be accepted.
20)Unless a shot is clearly tough, a 60 second shot clock should be observed. Upon any players request a person will be put on a clock. Slow play is not appreciated since the ante will be going up based on time and not racks played.
21) I'm pretty serious about this, bring your game faces.

I think that should cover it. I am open to suggestion and rules can be changed at the players meeting but after play starts all rules are final and will be enforced as such. The game will definitely being going off Saturday afternoon with a players meeting at 4PM and play starting at 4:30PM. Please tell people and help each other buy into this event. An unlimited amount of players can play in this format and not adversely affect the length of the game since antes increase every 30 minutes.

See everyone there on Saturday...I expect to kick everyones ass or go out kicking and screaming.

I hope this tournament is successful. Are you planning on doing it weekly, biweekly, monthly? The first time I will be able to play is in two weeks on the 27th.

A couple questions about the format. What is the maximum and minimum number of players per table? And if you have multiple tables, will the tables balance as players are eliminated?

Looks like a good plan, make it if I can... gotta start negotiations soon.

I am interested in Mike's questions too.

:joyful:

I'd love to hold this tourney weekly and I plan on holding it weekly for now.
Maximum of 6 players per table. Player eliminations will be handled as such. If we have two tables with 6 players, both tables will play until there are 3 remaining players, then the tables will be combined. If we were to get 18 players then the 1st round would play until 3 tables had 4 remaining players, then they would combine to two tables of 6 and be handled the same way. This keeps the chips balanced.

Don't mean to pester ya, I just want to make sure you have all your bases covered....

WHAT IF...you have two tables and after a while of play, one table has 5 or 6 players and the other table gets down to two? Wouldn't you want to move a random player to balance the tables as they become "unbalanced"? For example, if there were still 6 on one table and the other table drops to four...

I have only glanced at this format once on tv. How exactly does it work? Potentially 6 shooters in one game or is one person just playing one person for the ante? If all can potentially shoot do they all pay the ante to the player who sinks the 10 or only the people who got to shoot in the game? Excuse my dumbness...just haven't played this way before.

Everyone ante's one chip (or whatever) then whoever makes the 10 that rack wins the ante's. Then everyone re-ante's and play another game. You could potentially be down half your stack without shooting at a ball.

So potentially one person who is playing lights out can dominate this game and a person may shoot two to three times and be out?

I'm gonna go with "pestering". Just kidding. I agree with you, you shift to equal out the players. It will speed up the action, and make it more fair.
