Cork Wrap Question

Brady,

There's a place on Deer Valley Road called Quality Industrial Products that sells "Neo-cork", which is cork granules blended with either a neoprene or Buna-N rubber binder (much tougher than the standard cork that Roger was talking about). They actually have several different types and colors of this material. Unfortunately, there is a pretty large minimum order from Dodge-Regupol, so they'll have what they have in stock. If you talk to Gail (602) 861-2930 or Tracy, tell them that Steve Feld sent you. If they don't have much stock, ask them for the number for the G.B. Tewes company in CA and they should have about any type you would need.

Good luck!

Steve
I think Ryan Theewen at Mueller has those neo cork and he does a great job with wraps. Last i remembered he also mentioned something about dyeing the regular cork. Maybe you can ask him about it.

I think they are also in those Mueller catalog.

Cork wraps are great. Guido Orlandi does the best cork wraps I have ever seen! I had one and wish I had never sold it. It was almost impossible to find the seam. Sorry I don't have his contact info but last I heard he was in Michigan.

Believe it or not, there are many different grades of cork. The finest, (most dense, smooth and soft), is used in the fishing rod industry, the best of that on flyfishing rods. The benifit of cork, besides feel, is that it is absorbent. That means that not only can it be stained, it can also bleed off if not done right.

The cork is put on in small rings, maybe an inch in length. It is slit down the side like a leather wrap. Each joint glued, as well as the seem. Once together, it can be turned down to form an even wrap.

There is a premiere fly fishing supply store in Minnesota that will sell you premiere cork that is better than anyone in the billiard industry has access to.

Pm if you are interested in their contact info.

Ps; they also came out last year with a synthetic replacement that is able to survive daily handling, moisture etc, for a lot longer. Both options are very expensive though.....

The cork grip (JMHO) is a good feel, but it is not a long term product. That much has been proven. I am sure there are a few cues that have lasted, with the cork grip, but there are a few Model A's running around too.

The 1st thing to remember about this forum, is this; everyone has an opinion & a nose. Lots of them are different.

Good Luck with your choice...

All wraps are perishable and need to be replaced, in time, just like tips and ferrules. All will take care of you as long and as well as you take care of them.

I have a cork wrap done by Jack Madden. He somehow injected black dye into in and it looks like leather but feels like cork. I love it. I have played with a cork wrap for a long time even prior to this cue and have never had one come apart like Roger Long said?? Maybe I have just been lucky but cork has the ultimate feel IMHO..

Could you post some pics of this wrap of yours ?

Thanks, Ghost

They feel good, but the cork chips out whenever the handle gets hit on anything, eventually leaving the wrap full of holes.

Roger

That would be bad if the cork started to come apart. I never thought about that happening to a cork wrap.

Here are a couple pics of the one I have now.

This is the one I have now. I have another cue that has a black leather wrap on it but I want to replace the black leather wrap with a black cork wrap. I took these with my cell phone this morning so they are not super high quality.

I am working on a black cork wrap that should be done today or tomorrow. I'll post pics when completed.

Rat cue

That would be awesome Ryan. I love the feel of cork wraps also but I've never seen any color options with them. Black would be a great option.

Here's one that I had at SBE this year that was stained to match the cocobolo in the points and sleeve. Its the cue on the far right.

Nicely done RAT!

I have a cue being built right now by LP and I'm trying to get cork on it. I'm waiting for an answer now. He's looking into it.

I had a Joss YEARS ago with cork that was broke in real nice, and I loved it.

I just picked up a Coker that has a stack leather wrap that is sweet also....if you are into alternatives...
